Can the zerks on the flange bearings be greased to quiet things down a bit? Where its the majority of the noise on the KMG coming from. Just wanted to see what you guys have done if anything to quiet the beast down. Thanks

Seems like I remember that Rob did not recommend greasing the zerks.

You might check the belt pulley alignment and belt tension. It will run the quietest on the 8 or 10 inch wheel. A little more noise on the platen, and a lot more noise with the rotary platen. The more belt friction (as with the platen), and the increased number of bearings turning equate to increased noise.

I'm pretty quiet when I just wiggle one finger, but I squeak pretty badly when I try to dance.

My KMG is very quiet. Try disconnecting the belt and run just the motor. Some motors are pretty noisy. Not much you can do about a loud motor unless it has a bearing going bad.

If that isn't it, feel for hot bearings, you may have a bearing going bad.

Run it without a grinding belt etc to find the problem area.

The zerk fitting on the KMG doesn't go anywhere. Greasing it won't do anything.

If all the bearings everywhere are making a little noise that is adding up, you can replace them with sealed ABEC 3 bearings, which are very quiet.

Do the ma,nufacturers of the flange bearings use the same casting for non sealed bearings also and therefore have a zerk for that application? Is the zerk there to provide a smoother of center axis load and allow the bearing to pivot in the casting?

I would take the sanding belt off and just run the motor and drive shaft. Then I would take the drive belt off and just run the motor. This should at least help you narrow down where the noise is coming from.

BTW, what kind of belt are you using?

A Fenner linked belt might quiet things down if you're not already using one.

My setup is temporary for now so it's with a 42" drive belt for now. I just might go with a link belt since I will be placing the motor on the under side of the steel table top. 2holes for the belt pass through would be much easier. Have you used the link belts? I understand how they work but are they quiter yet accomplish the same thing?

The linked belts run both quieter and smoother than a standard v-belt. Well worth the investment, and once you try one on your grinder, you'll likely want one for every belt driven tool in your shop.

When everything else fails try ear plugs. I added a bit more of a crown to the idle wheel with some electrical tape and it helped some with the noise plus it made the belt track better.

Well that is quick and easy. I'm getting link belt this weekend do will find out quickly

Mine is real quiet now. It wasn't though, the set screws on the drive wheel on the lower back right hand side was loose. It was really loud when it was running fast. I loosened it and re-tightened it now it runs smooth and quiet.
