It's gonna be tough getting 220 to my shop so I need to find out if it's possible to use a single phase 1.5 hp with variable speed. I know it's better to get more HPs, but I have to start somewhere and I can always use a 1.5 for something else when I upgrade.

if it is possible, is do I go with 3450 or 1745??

thanks! i'm getting close and I'm excited...

Yes it is possible....... with a step pulley setup.
No true variable speed with a normal single phase 110v AC motor. You could get a variable speed setup with a DC motor.

i have a kbac 24, so it won't be a step pulley system. can you give me further details on a DC motor that would work???

oops... I do have the kbac 27d... but I think the issue is that running a 1.5hp 110 can burn this motor out???? are there any decent options of doing it this way? I'm not sure what to look for in a DC option...

I've been running mine for about a year with no issues. if you have the package Rob sell's you'll be good to go!

Hey wait, i have the same dilemma, no 220 in my shop and im motor illiterate . ive looked and looked for a 110 variable speed set to no avail....

I have found a motor that is 110 or 220 , but im told it wont work with a controller.

We electronically impaired noob knife makers need help. Im probably going to go ahead and set this grinder up direct drive and when my money is right try to get the setup i need. I can always use this motor on something different.

Id like to setup a machine to do nothing but surface grind .

Somebody just give us a sign......

well I found out I have 220 possibilities, so I'm just going that route. man... this stuff is voodoo to me. but I sure can't wait to put my craftsman to the back-bench.

one last question...

if I'm going 2hp is this what I'm looking for in any model?

2hp 3ph TECF motor

I think you meant TEFC (Totally enclosed Fan cooled).
Yes that looks about right if you plan to run it off of a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive).
Dont forge what frame size you are looking for, IE 56C, 56H, 145T etc
Chris

well I'm mounting it right onto an oak bench..so frame size might not be important????

and now I'm having a hard time finding the right motor combo anywhere!!! 2hp TEFC 3 phase 3600 rpm... any suggestions???

Scott, look for a small motor repair shop in you area. Used 3 phase motors usually can be found on the cheap and they can answer some of the questions you have.

2hp 3ph TECF motor

2 hp
3 ph
220v (not 380)
I say 3400 rpm not 1700

(since you are using a kmg with puleys and not a direct drive GIB, you could get a cheaper 1700 rpm motor and use a 3 step pulley on high speed to double the speed)

TEFC or TENV

If you are mounting to kmg and not the Grinder In a Box, frame style wont matter as much, as long as it has a base plate.

I finally read part of the manual

TEFC motors will work (and are quite common)

TENV Totaly Enclosed Non Ventilated have better torque delivery over the full speed range.

This is probably more important for conveyor belts than knife grinders, but if you have the chance to buy a TENV motor at at good price, do it.

hah... I thought frame was some kind of mounting configuration.... so I've figured that out.

Thank you Patrice... The closest shop is 3 hours away. I'm out there... but it is a good idea to call.

But that ebay listing I posted sure seems like the right one...

still trying to decide between 1.5 hp and 2 hp. If I go with 1.5 hp variable speed on a kbac 27d, does it have to be 3 phase?

also.... if I decide to go with the TECO FM-50 VFD (and make a box)... I see that they are sold by horsepower. Do you just go with the horsepower for the motor? 1.5hp motor = 1.5hp VFD????
