I'm really excited, I ordered a KMG Grinder last night! I've been wanting one for a while, my old craftsman 4x36 is just about worn out.

I ordered a basic setup and it is going to rock! 10" contact wheel, 2hp motor with the 3 speed pulley setup. I also got an extra tool arm so I can easily switch between the platen and the 10" wheel.

My questions are:

Can I grind on the smaller wheel above the platen?

Do I need a 2" contact wheel (urethane coated?) instead of the stock metal wheel above the platen to grind on?

I ask because I noticed some people have gone to a 2" contact wheel on the top of the platen. I can't really afford the small wheel setup, and need to be able to cut out my blanks with the KMG.

I would have Rob switch out the top alum.wheel with a 2" contact wheel. That's what I did and it works great. He just charges a few bucks more for the contact wheel.

Thanks SBuzek and Silver pilate I appreciate the help.

I sent an e-mail to Rob asking if it wasn't too late to switch it out and what he thought so it may be switched out.

I think this will work better for me this way. I know it will be 10,000 times better than the craftsman, the metal wheels on it are severely worn in spots.

I'm happy for you! I wanted a KMG for a long time and still do. Congratulations. Having a good grinder will make you enjoy your time standing in front of it a whole lot more.

Thanks! I have wanted one for a few years now, can't wait to use it.

Now all I need is a shop, this is going in a carport! When the snow melts I'm going to start working on a small workshop. :D

The small wheel attachment is a wonderful addition to this grinder; they are useful in so many ways.
The serrated composite wheels are a must if you are considering using the two inch wheels to grind against. I use the wheel below the platen the most.

The KMG is a well made grinder; I run two of them. One for over nine years with no down time.
Robs a good guy to deal with.

Enjoy, Fred

Thanks Fred, now all I need is to get one of your jigs now. :D

I got an email from Rob this morning and it is being put together for me today with the two inch contact wheel on top! Belts are coming from Supergrit and USAknifemaker! :D

I need to go out soon and run some 220 power to my shop. I'm assuming it will come with a plug for the 220 or do I need to wire it direct?

+1

Aside from investing in various wheel sizes the Small Wheel attachment has been the best thing I bought for the KMG.

jsut get a stove or dryer plug pig tail and the proper outlet and wire it that way
i have all my 220 line using the same plug (you will never draw 40 amp so its ok )

i have my 2" contact wheel on top as i use it to make ful hollow razor grinds
the 2nd thing i got for my KMG was a small wheel setup with 3/4 inhc wheel
now im looking at getting a 2nd KMG set up to run 3 inch wide belts for the hoss motor i have as a spare

Having used them both ways, I'd prefer to have a separate wheel if using it for grinding. If using it as a quick soft wheel or radius while having the platen attached, then it's fine, but I don't like them on top for grinding. I like to be able to get all over the wheel. Having it swapped out is definitely better than trying to use the metal one, however.

THE KMG IS HERE! :D

It looks like it could be part of a jet or a supercharger. :D :D :D

What kind of and what size bolts do I need to get for this so I can mount everything to the base plate? Should I use loctite (sp?) or anything like that? I can guess the size but I'm no bolt expert, any tips? I have the 2hp non-vfd motor if that matters.

Why guess? Measure the holes.

Didn't Rob include the bolts?

They are getting measured, I said guess because I've gotten the wrong parts for stuff before. :)

This is trip three to the hardware store for me for this, another 60 mile trip and it is about to start snowing. I don't mind, I'm really amped to finally get this, just want to be grinding tonight! :D

I think I have it figured it out, I just want to do a first class job.

I have my small wheel attachment on the same tooling arm as my large contact wheel. I just flip it over to use the other attachment and it never seems to get in the way....just an idea for the future!

OK so I just got back from the hardware store and I got the WRONG bolts!

I just don't get it, the ones I thought were 1/4" are slightly bigger and the ones I thought were 1/2" are too big!
"
What are they metric or something? They didn't have any 5/16" or 7/16" bolts...
