If I remember right Ken gave the platen to anyone who wanted it....... I think. That's why Rob persued it.

There is a thread from years ago. Look it up.

To patent it Ken would have had to done it before that point.

It is a great idea and would have stuck it think in the patent office.
Enough sales to support the patent could have been a issue maybe?

Happy Thanksgiving

Darrel
I remember that thread
wasn't it mostly born right here in shop talk by Ken
I'll have to look it up now.. I do remember you got the first one to try out..

Flat Grind Heaven!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the result of a discussion a few weeks ago in The Custom Knife Forum about flat grinding.....

The idea was originated by Ken Onion about a "rotary Platen" to eliminate the annoying thump and bump from tradition platen grinders. Inspired and encouraged by Ken and others, I built a prototype and tried it out today

Wow!! That was a ride in the "way-back" machine!!! The way I remember it....I was off-line for a week or so when Fitzo phoned me in the shop. He said" Rob, check out the discussion about a new platen that Ken Onion is talking about" I logged on and looked. What a cool idea! I checked with Ken...and he gave his belssing the run with it. I imediately drew up a concept and started making chips. As soon as it was done, I ran it over to Darrel Ralph's shop for a trial. That's the one in the photos...from the post above by Dan. I watched Darrel put it through it's paces and we kicked a few ideas around...then I came back and implemented the new ideas...which is now the current version. A few weeks later, I meet Ken for the first time at the Blade show where I had the final design. We shook hands, smiled and the rest is history.

That was a hectic blade show!! The crowds gathered around 2,3 and 4 deep trying to get a glimpse of this thing. What is it? What does it do? how does it work..? the questions and comments never ended. At that point, there was very little experience or testing...and I didn't know how to answer the barrage of inquistive on-lookers. Ken even brought Dan Johnson over to look at it. This was the first time that Dan and I meet. Now we shake and greet each other at every event that we co-attend. (Great guy BTW).

I called Rob today and I've got it ordered.:D Now the wait begins. He has to make up some tool arms, could take about a week. Can't wait to put it into action.
Scott

Got the rotary platen today.:D I have some grinding to do this week. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the excellent service Rob.
Scott

You bet Scott! I was able to get the arms done sooner than I thought.

Have fun with it and THANK YOU!!!

I think Rob could make it work on the q/w but as is no, if I remember right..

No Dan. I like the convex grind too much to change.:D I played with the tension screw and you can tighten it enough to just about flat grind. I can bring the convex grind up faster with this baby. Definately saves time. I just have to get out of the habit of bearing down. No need to now.
Scott

I like my belt tighten really good.
Is it any danger of breaking rubber belt by overtightening?
