Just got my new KMG rotary platen today and I had to try it out right away. I had left a couple of blades at 40 grit and ran them at 120. This thing works like a charm. No bump at all, butit is a bitmore "grabby" so you use a lighter touch, whihc is probably a good thing. No divots or deep gouges and the finish looks like a 220. There is a bit of relearning to do as far as rolling the edge of the belt, but that shoudl come pretty quickly. I can't wait to loosen the timing belt up and use this thing for handles. It should also be great for putting on a convex edge.

I just got mine installed, but haven't ground anything with it yet. Damn bench is covered with sheaths... Dang sheaths.

Joe, I think you'll really like it for handles. Back in August, I was down in JR Cook's shop where he a Jerry Fisk showed me some of the things that they do with their KMGs. Jerry demonstrated how the RPA grinds pins flush with the handle material, saving him a ton of time. His previous processes tended to remove the softer handle material around the harder pin, leaving a "bump"..or what he called "pin swell".

Nice accessory you have there, Rob:thumbup: Like I said, it tend to "grab" more tha the steel platen, but it seems to leave a much finer finish relative to the belt grit used and more importantly, no divots:D I used one of the short sides and got a VERY nice Moran style slight convex shape on a 1 1/2 inch wide blade using a 120 grit belt.

does it "click" into position, or does the belt tension hold it there? thanks!

I love mine. I hardly ever put the flat platen on now. I still use the 14" contact wheel from time to time. You'll love it for handles.
