I would like to know what benefit would it be to have a kmg rotary platen,--what do youall mainly use it for. thank you marekz

I don't have one, but I'd sure like one. Tell you what.... Go ahead and pick it up, and if you don't like it, send it to me ;).

One of the major benefits of the rotary platen is that it pretty much eliminates belt bump from the seam as the platen belt rotates with the grinding belt. It also allows for a smooth and quiet operation. With the belt tight and all the sheaves behind the belt, it will give just almost a flat grind. There will be a slight, very slight convexing. Also, you can change orientation and go for a more convexed finish. And you've got basically a 2" contact wheel on the corner of the platen. If you know how the grinder acts when using a contact wheel, this allows for a similar experience with an almost flat platen.

If you're looking into KMG accessories, you might check out Adam Michael's MAP arm as well. It's on my to-buy list.

I use my rotary platten more than any other attachment. For convex grinding you can't beat it.

Yes, I use my rotary platen for almost all my grinding jobs. A+ on handle work.

Excellent for handle and guard work. Very good for getting a convex grind, but use a lighter touch or you can get some ripples that you will have to sand out late. As previously mentioned, it also pretty much eliminates belt bump on lighter fine grit belts. IMO, another "must have" item for your KMG is the soft covered 4 inch contact wheel that Mr. Mickley sells.

Does the rotary platen help with bumps in transitions from handle material to bolsters or handle material and pins?

It's better than a slack belt but not as good as a truly hard backing. The harder the backing
the less bump you'll get from the softer material being sanded more.

My Rotary Platen is my favorite attachment for the KMG. It's great for handles and convex grinds. I use the short side for a soft platen and the long side for a beefy slack belt.

Does the rotary platen help with bumps in transitions from handle material to bolsters or handle material and pins?
Yes, but because it is not a rigid platen, you can get some rounding over if you bear down. It is killer for grinding handle pins flush.
