what is the shortest belt you have used on you kmg and it did speed it up useing the shorter belt, and did it hurt it?

Don't have a KMG, so I'm not sure how short a belt you can run. But, running a shorter belt won't change the linear feet/second. The only thing that will change that is a set of step pullies, smaller or larger drive wheel, or a variable speed control (smaller wheel=slower belt speed, larger wheel=faster belt speed).

I'm pretty sure the KMG is designed for 2 x 72 belts in it's standard configuration. I have no idea how much tension adjustment there is but it can't possibly allow for a length difference of more than an inch or two. An inch shorter belt would last about 1/72 less grinding that a full 72 inch belt. Less abrasive means less life. That's why most of use 2 x 72 instead of 2 x 48 or less.

Why then, you ask, don't we use 2 x 1,000,000 belts?

Small shops!

Rob!

The kmg should shorten up to 60" belts without a problem. Your belt speed will change, but it should be negligible. If you run a VS grinder, then you can change it. Most of the Coote and Grizzly grinders out there run far faster than the KMG and the Bader grinders come with different size drive wheels to change their sfpm, so I wouldn't worry about a couple hundred sfpm.

I think you're probably seeing a good deal on 60" belts, I've seen them too. What Rob said is the most important part I think - the belts won't last as long. Heat buildup on shorter belts also decreases life, so it's not a linear scale.

I went and measured with string. With an 8" wheel, 58". With a platen (no workrest; it matters!), 62-64".

I'm trying to figure out what you mean by "belt speed will change", Cap. Belt RPM, yes; SFPM, no.

I think he means the belt for the motor? Maybe Im wrong?

Sorry Mike, you're right. Wasn't thinking about the sfpm, shouldn't change unless the drive wheel does... should know that since I run 132" belts huh?
