John of JK Knives has announced he will no longer be making my Knatchet design as he says it is not cost effective !
Fellow forumite echo-7 has just got one made in time, I'm sorry more people did not get chance to find out just what a handy tool this thing is.

Anyway I set of out with mine today on a Fatwood hunt...bet Bushmans ears pricked up then eh !!!!

Fatwood found so to work with the Knatchet....

Check out the smooth chops it makes....

I headed to a nice view spot to test out the quality of the fatwood, yeah this will do....

Now on to splitting some of the fatwood down a little....

The Knatchet makes fuzz sticks as good as any of my knives....

Now to add a little fatwood dust by scraping the fatwood with the blade...

2 strikes later...

At this point Maisy reminded me that it was time to move on...

Thanks again for making such an awesome tool John, everything as good as I'd hoped and then some !

That's too bad...your design is really unique and quite handy. I'm assuming the cost is the size of steel needed for that big axe-like blade. Great pics as usuall!

Perhaps he could simply offer it at a higher price, where it is cost effective.

Maybe. This is what he said:

I`m in the process of making my last Knatchet right now. The reasons are that it is way too costly to make, and the only handle material I can get long enough for the handle is tan micarta.

I have really liked your design, Pit, and always enjoy your posts.
Some other maker may pick it up, it's not always about the money, for me anyways.

Great pics, pit!

I was worried when I saw the thread title - I thought you had somehow managed to bust your knatchet (perhaps by following the jwilliams car hood + bullet method ;) )!

That fatwood looks great. I have forgotten how nice the stuff smells until I handled the chunk you attached to the lanyard of the JK passaround knife.

Maisy certainly does look impatient ...

All the best,

- Mike

If I was him I would just charge way to much so people could still order it and he is richly rewarded when they order one.

thats too bad Pitdog..........

one COULD always order the similar shaped knife from TOPS, its not quite the same i know but similar design........

nice fatwood bro!

um....maisy is telling you "wheres my biscuit?"

oh by the way, you title had me worried, i thought you had somehow broken your Knatchet, or lost it in the briny sea!

Nah if it's the one I'm thinking of it may look similar but in use it would be very different. For a start it has a thick sabre grind, it's 1/4" thick and nowhere near as long as my Knatchet so not only would it not slice anywhere as well it would also lag behind when chopping !:thumbdn:

Nice Fatwood!

How long are those slabs? Do you use this thing with two hands or just one mostly? Just wondering if John can shorten the slabs a bit to about 4.5" or so?

Nah it wouldn't really work if he did !

The slabs are 6" long, as it is I can place my hand right up to the blade and it is comfy as I'm still gripping a lot of scale, the Knatchet now acts as a 4" bladed knife.
If I drop my hand right to the back of the scales it now chops the same as a 7" bladed knife or small hatchet.

And if anyone is wondering why I did not carry the scales all the way to the blade it was so I can batton through larger sections of wood than the 4" blade would allow.

That makes sense Pitdog. Thanks for the explanation of its design features.

Perhaps he could simply offer it at a higher price, where it is cost effective.

I'm sure that what he meant by cost effective is "I can't make these at a price people will pay and still make a profit." I'm sure he'd make one if one said "I want that knife, I'll take whatever scales you can get, name the price, I'll pay it." Don't know any custom maker that wouldn't accept those conditions, unless it was just such a pain in the ass to make they didn't want to bother.

I was worried that Mrs. Pit threw it at him and hit him in the head -- shattering the blade!!
:D
