Looks like my outdoor activities may be limited from now on. Im having trouble with a knee. It came on suddenly. No injuries or trauma. All at once there is no strength there. Its hard to get up , climb stairs, ladders.... Also its making popping noises. Any of you experience this? Im 51 and have always been active. The knee has seen a lot of use.

I have problems. Largely from extended use (work), weight gain and psoriatic arthritis. Dr. says stretching, more fluids and weight loss are key, but with arthritis (and a lot of popping which is hilarious to family members in the morning:grumpy:) I am due for some updated treatment. I am 42 and have had knee problems for at least ten years. I wish you the best.

Recurring dislocation in my right knee. I have genetically small and high kneecaps. Put paid to my LEO dreams when I was a young idealist.
They are generally OK, but it gets fatigued easily from climbing.
Popping sounds like a possible cartilage problem (From my limited football [Sorry, soccer] days).
I wish you both the best.

Oh, and beyond me telling you about me.:o Don't hesitate to get it checked. Even if you don't think you injured it. Just a suggestion.;)

Get it checked. Could be torn cartilage. I just had my left knee replaced so I am familiar with knee problems.

Any fluid build up? If so, it can be drained. But see your DR.

I am fat, and will be inactive for days, and then hike ten miles and wonder why I can't move the next day. Well, I used to be, I am doing better. Hell, I am only 29.

I take naproxen, meloxicam and plain ol' otc ibuprofen for my knees. The naproxen and meloxicam improve my ability to get around, and the ibuprofen takes care of my knees. I still pop like popcorn, but I am more mobile.

Can't remember the name of it, some type of icy hot cream. I put it on my legs when I go for a walk in the summer time. It always makes me want to run. Make sure all of it is off your hands after you coat your knees. It might make you jump if nature calls.

My father just had bilateral knee replacements done. Take care of your knees boys!!

Dipbait, see a doc before the damage will require surgery. Might be a physical therapy fix.

Any pain? I had a torn meniscus with those same symptoms. Messed around with it for a year or two before I went to the doc. Easy fix, arthroscopic surgery, and good as new, and I have used it hard since then. So I would say go to the doc, first thing.

Sounds a lot like mine minus the popping. That comes from my hips. Especially after sitting in one position for a long time. I spent years working on cars, kneeling down on concrete and steel grates. Even with knee pads it took its toll.

I'm 40 and have had issues on and off with my knees for about 10 years as well.

I figure by the time I'm 60, and the way medical science is advancing, I can get some new ones then. It'll be outpatient surgery, they'll be made of some high-tech synthetics and I'll be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. :p

I just found out I have Runners Knee(Patellofemoral Pain). (I'm in my upper 30's.)

Same here, and also in my 30's.
Doc prescribed a brace, which I wore daily for probably a year or so and it did work well. I haven't been wearing it for some time now and am finding the aches are starting to return again so I guess I'll have to dig out that brace.

Listen to J! When seeing your doc, pointedly ask him about physiotherapy as an option. Sometimes the docs minimize this as an option because many folks are not willing to follow through on the exercises or simply want a surgery 'quick fix'.

A colleague of mine is 60 and has been having knee troubles for a while. He is 6'5" and over 300 lbs (tall with body fat but not really obese). Always was very active. He was getting steroid injections regularly and was resigned to go to surgery this winter. His doctor asked him to try a last trial effort at a physiotherapist. He took to his exercises like a new religion and saw very rapid improvements. The doc pulled him from the surgery cue!

Take heart friend.
I'm a survivor of 3 really bad accidents with my left knee.Once I was off my feet for 3 months and using crutches to get around.I've been through physio a few times and had it scoped for bone fragments. If you keep the surrounding muscles strong then you'll do alright.I have a 1200.00$ knee brace sitting under my bed and that's where it stays.Even when I'm on week-long hiking trips under my 60 lb pack.I rarely have any trouble with it.I walk religiously to keep in shape so my knees and feet are taken care of as best I can.

I fell off a 35' telephone pole back in 1970. Shattered my right knee cartilage. For two years I had to have it drained so much I wanted doc to put in a faucet. Had it operated on in 1972, never was right. Can't squat, run, stand in place too long and it lets me know when cold weather is coming. Sounds like an old car jack when I stand. I'm waiting for nano-bots to help me or have it replaced when I get over my fear of giant screws in my leg. Only good thing about it, kept me out of Nam, when I got drafted.

DB -- Sounds like it could be a torn meniscus. Take it easy, cancel the upcoming sky diving trip--no need to make it worse. Go see the Doc. MRI may be useful, but I wouldn't be surprised if you end up getting scoped.

I don't usually end up in this forum, but I am an orthopedic surgeon, so I figure I can help out.

You have actually gotten a lot of good advice already.

It DOES sound like a meniscus tear, and you likely have a little arthritis as well.

In fact, all meniscus tears do NOT require surgery...but some do. See an orthopedic surgeon and try some PT first. Worst that happens with PT...it doesn't help and you end up needing a scope, which is a minor procedure these days

If God forbid, you get told you need a knee replacement, since you live in MO, email me and I will pass along the info for a surgeon in Illinois that did a family member and 4 other folks I know. He has pioneered a new MUCH less invasive way of doing them, that does wonders!

It's strange but my knee's are about the only joints that don't bother me. I injured one knee that used to get fluid on it when I trolled a lot of concrete but it seems to have gotten over it. Of course I don't do cement work anymore.:)

Do you also have swelling ? could be a torn meniscus

sorry to hear about the knee problems... if it goes on, i definately reccomend going to see a doc... knee problems are no joke. they can put a damper on your everday lifestyle...

i have had 2 knee surgeries in the past 5 years... both on the same knee, for same meniscus tear...:thumbdn:

good luck...
