Hi all, my grandfather gave me his old knife from when he was in the marines. It is in pretty rough shape. I got all the surface rust and dirt off but I would like to get it back looking new again. The knife originally had a compressed rubber disk handle on it but there is now no handle on it at all. The pommel is still attached. How would I go about taking the pommel off so that I could put a wooden handle on it. Also, the blade has lost all of its "shine" is there any way that I can plate that again? Sorry if my questions are stupid but I dont know too much about knives but I would love to learn more. Thanks, Ed.

As far as the pommel goes, you'll just have to ''play'' with it a little bit to see how it comes apart. As far as cleaning the blade goes, plating really isnt the answer, what you have to do is sand it. Start with a sanding block and a fairly coarse emery cloth. Sand it slowly and carefully to remove all rust, pits, and scratches. Sand in one direction only. Then move on to a little finer grit of emery cloth and sand 90 gegerrs to the last time. Repeat this procedure using progressivly finer emery cloth and changing direction each time. Each time you are only trying to remove the scratches left from the last time. I probably didn't explain it all that well, but I think you get the point. Hope this helps.

If the knife has flat surfaces wrap the sandpaper around a wood block to keep it flat. that way the knife keeps its lines.

If you want it to shine for your final polish Simichrome polish works really well for hand finishing

a rusted blade can look good if just buffed. that way you keep the aged look but its shiny. the butt might be threded on and just needs some wd40. if you get us some pictures we could be of more help.

Gettin the pommel off, There might be a pin that goes through the pommel and through the blade, Or the tang might pass all the way through the pommel and get peened over on the end.
