Knife #1 finished - First Shop Talk post under real name

The knife is superb. I'm not qualified enough to add any critiques.

I like the composition of the photo, but to me it looks a little dark and the color balance is a bit off.

Try bumping up the exposure so the histogram is all the way to the right without going over. This will give you the best quality file to work with (highlights are less noisy than shadows). This works best in RAW. Adjust curves in GIMP to taste.

I prefer to adjust white balance in the computer rather than in camera. It is more versatile and accurate. It does require you to shoot in RAW, though (which you should be doing anyway). Jpegs have the WB already baked in and offer little adjustment latitude. On this photo, I would start by setting the reflection off the blade to white (it's yellow right now) using the spot tool. Then you can tweak from there to taste. When the WB is satisfactory, export to GIMP.

I'm not sure what RAW processor you can use, but Canon's DPP does good work, (the inderface leaves something to be desired), and it's free. Adjust exposure and WB, then export to GIMP as a 16-bit TIFF. Do all of your adjustments in 16-bit mode. Later, you can export the photo as a 8-bit jpeg suitable for the web. This will help preserve color and tonality information.
