I finished today a knife for my friend who hunts. He gave me an idea of what he wanted in a knife, so I based it around his idea of a good all around skinning knife. This is the first knife that is leaving my family, so he can test it and let me know how it works.

Specs:
1084 steel
3.5" blade
7.625" Overall length
JatMat's G11 with stainless steel pins/lanyard tube

I messed up a plunge line with a groove on one side from a file, and I probably thinned it out too much, since you can see a couple of the weight-removing holes through the G11.

As always with my knives, criticize away.

Oh yea Mike that is a looker. I bet it will work great for your bud. I like the satin machine finish and the grind lines are looking good to. Nice work Mike!!

I would like to see one that was a bit shorter by taking out that middle section between the blade and the handle. I think you would have a right smart knife then.:D
I think it would also look nice with a hand finish.
Love that 1084...is it Aldos?
Keep up the good work.

Maybe it's just the 50 pounds of it sitting in my garage, but I really like the look of that G-11.

Frank, thanks for the compliment!

Mace, it was his idea in the picture he sent me of what he wanted in a skinning knife. I thought about a hand finish, but I thought I'd try a machine finish on this one. I'll probably do mostly hand finishes on most knives. And the 1084 is from Admirals closeout sale.

DrThunder, I have about 90 pounds in my basement  Finally using some up!

Good work Mike, for #12....I agree with Mace about shortening the ricasso area and sticking with a hand finish though. I like the profile of the blade, looks like a nice caping knife.

Bingo! but mind your ricasso. it's the part the rest of the blade is built off of. So keep it as flat as possible. Also on using semi translucent handle material, make sure you use a opaque epoxy so you dont have a hole showing. I like Loctite Metal it's 24 hour and GOOD! it's black and would darken the scales up to. :D

Thats what I'm talking about Mike. Maybe tip the front part of the handle up just a little so it's more in line with the top of the blade.
Looks good.

Thanks for the epoxy idea, Jason. I forgot that it was semi-transparent until I saw the holes through it :o

I would definitely do that if I did that design. Just when I cut and pasted, it got thrown off a little.

Mike, Just remember the customer is NOT always right. Part of our job as knife makers is to help guide the customer into a good design. They may think they know what they want, but it is ultimately up to us to make a knife we would be proud to put our name on. Just some food for thought for the future.;)
