I've got to add a little Rodger. I remember well when you first started and asked the usual....what-to-do questions. At that time I was looking more at your stocks and admiring the craftsmanship in them. In a very short time you started turning out good knives and educating yourself in the higher points of heat treating and steel qualities. Instead of picking one type of knife and steel like many of us, including myself, you have expanded and experimented to many styles and tried to use many steels :barf: stainless and carbon!
Your knives are now not only professional quality, but very high quality and suited to the task they were designed for. Since you have always been fairly humble about your progress, I'd like to send a little extra praise your way!
Roger, Looks like you nailed #18 if you ask me. Walrus cheek bone, sure looks like oosic. It really has a nice color and texture to it. Whats the difference between the RL and the ATS?
Peter, you are very kind and I will take it. Thanks a bunch and to you too J. and Dan.
Dan, I need to call you more often and let you talk more. I like to learn from craftsman such as you.
Raymond, it seems there are two notible material differences between ATS-34 and RWL-34: RWL-34 data sheet specifies it has 0.2 percent vanadium and RWL-34 is what we, or I, loosely refer to as a 'powder steel'.
I like what I have seen of RWL-34 so far but do not have enough experience comparing the two to have a solid preference however, I do like the idea of having enough vanadium content to aid in deep hardening.
