A few weeks ago I finished #1 and posted it here and got some great advice. Here is #3. I would appreciate critique in any area of design and execution.

Aldo's 1/8" 1084, HT in 2BF. Ground on Craftsman 2x42. I did some hand-sanding before HT, but none on the blade after. Just used the belt. (I did hand-sand the ricasso after HT). Homemade burlap micarta.

First try a full flat grind and belt finish (A45 Gator). There are a couple of lines/dips that only show in direct light (I included a picture showing that). If I am going for a belt finish, when is the best time in the grinding process to hand sand to get the dips out? (I assume hand sanding with a hard block would be the way to go.)

This knife is special because it is for my 16 year-old daughter who is spending 7 weeks in Panama this summer doing a service project in a poor, rural community with an organization called Amigos de las Americas. She will be taking it with her!

Thank you for all the info here on BF!

Nice job overall. The few things I noticed is the fit around the pins. If you use the correct size bit and a good drill press you can make the fit a lot better. On the design side I like the butt to have a little flare. What's the green in the handle?

I would tell your daughter to keep it oiled since she will be in a humid/salty environment.

The marks you're talking about look like 2 inch marks. Don't stop at the plunge and you can minimize or eliminate those.

Thank you for your suggestions, Matt. Very helpful. I agree about the handle butt. The green and red were colored lines down one side of the burlap bag I had sitting around. I cut the strips so the colored lines were arranged like that in the scales. I'm pretty happy with the scales, although they turned out pretty thin because it turns out burlap presses down much thinner than cloth or denim. Next time I would use more layers.

You did a very good job on the knife, Your daughter will be very happy to carry a handmade knife by her dad.

That's a fine looking knife, and that burlap handle turned out GREAT. I really like that you left the colored lines in it.
Looks like it will be a nice functional design, and I'm sure your daughter will be proud to carry and use it.
