Knife a friend just gave me

Friend of mine surprised me with this fixed blade, saying since I was into knives
I could keep it. I didnt know anything about it until I looked it up online; its
a Blackjack Classic Model 5, made in USA. The blade had surface rust in places and
the edge had a couple of decent dings, but I sanded off the rust (and rubbed out
with various steel wools, etc.) and used a stone to get rid of the edge dings.
After that I cut off the top part of the finger guard.. its not a collectors knife
and the top part of the guard gets in the way, so off it went. Lastly I covered the
stacked leather handle in a thin black leather wrap, for better grip.

This knife rocks! It sharpened up really really well, and I thought the thick blade
stock would resist PB paper sharpness testing but nothing of the sort. This blade
glides through it like it was moving through air. I'm not a Jeramiah Johnson, so I dont
expect to skin elk or fight off Indians, but I have tremendous pride of ownership now
for this beater knife my friend had sitting under the seat of his truck for years
and years. Now its mine!

We all need more friends like yours. I probably would have kept the guard and not wrapped the handle, but your knife, your call.

Very nice knife, it kind of is a collector at least to some.
But like coyote said, it's you knife.

Great score. Hope it will be seeing some sun light and not just stored under another truck seat. Enjoy

So what's the story with Black Jack knives?

Obvious copy of Randall. If they were made in China all hell would break loose.

Nothing better than a story like that. Great knife--you did a good job. My kina' knife...I get it.

Thanks dudes, theres a hollow on the top of the blade for the thumb to nestle into, and it was completely blocked by the upper part of the
guard. Upper part of the guard was not just useless but it detracted from functioning. Another thing I dont care for but will leave alone is
the blank area of blade just forward of the lower guard. I know it could support an index finger being there, but that area of the blade is
valuable and is the key place to initiate a difficult cut.. a bit wasted by making room there for an index finger to do something extremely
delicate. Not the best use of real estate IMO. But I love the knife and love that its a beater.

Yea. Well I've been called extremely rude names for saying the same thing.

With a fighting knife it's apparently there for more "reach". Or something.

A certain famous, now deceased and well copied knifemaker designed a hunter with the same feature. A place "to support an index finger" is called a choil and I pretty much hate them too.

That is a most excellent story - I love to hear stuff like this. You will get good use out of your BlackJack #5. I know - I have a #125, and it continues to serve me well:
