Knife abuse by friends and family members

Oh, and another story: Coworker asked me if I had a knife (of course), so I handed him my EDC of the day. He proceeded to cut open a pus-filled blister. Even though there wasn't any damage and thankfully this was a cheapo EDC that I was planning on getting rid of anyway, but still... Who puts their own bodily fluids on a borrowed knife? Disgusting. You can keep the knife now, pal. I'll just buy another one.

My wife has NEVER bought me a knife. 20 years of marriage……
We as knife nuts can be difficult people to buy knives for as gifts, I can see how it would be intimidating for those around us to get a knife we'd like. Especially given the cost of the knives I generally like. I don't think they factor in that any knife they gift us will be cherished. I have almost every knife ever given to me. The term "it's the thought that counts" absolutely applies here.

(The one I don't was a sak from when I was around 8 I think)

Exactly. It's the equivalent of trying to buy a purse for her. I just ask for BladeHQ gift cards now :D

Funny you’ve mentioned purse… I buy one for my wife every year, for Christmas. Those are Brahmin and Coach, darn expensive bags, probably I don’t have knives that cost such $$… She loves every single one of them.
‘Once in a while she buys knives for me. She never ask me what I like…
She bought me few of the knives I love most - Spyderco Vallotton, the GB1 and SIG auto made by Hogue,
I guess we know each other that well but no surprise here - I know her from high school and we got married right after I dismissed from army, almost 38 years already…

She could buy me an M Tech and I would still cherish it like it was a Sebenza! My daughter bought me a knife this Christmas- it’s a Copper Kershaw. It’s engraved. It is my favorite knife! It will probably never get used. None the less loaned out!!

I'm the same way. If someone important to me give me something, it's cherished, even if it's not something I would buy for myself.

My wife has excellent taste- her 2 favorites are my Dave Mary/GKC Super Brute and my double red Carothers FK2…… so she has no excuse.

One kitchen remedy that worked for me is my wife likes the Pioneer Woman stuff. So we have a huge PIONEER WOMAN CUTTING BOARD!

…… and she knows her way around a Sharpmaker!

At family gatherings or at work where I know I’ll be the first person asked if a knife is needed, I always carry a second knife to loan out. It used to be and old Aus 8 American Lawman, but now it’s either a Tuff Lite or old Recon mini. If someone asks I reach for the cheap knife that I don’t mind if it gets damaged.

Reminds me of going for a hike with friends.

I took Warcraft Tanto and ESEE3 with me...
Almost all of us had a knife, and since I had 2, my friend's GF asks me if I'll borrow her one (looking at my ESEE).

I was about to say no... but I remembered ESEE warranty and decided to go ahead and give her the knife...

Long story short - she struggled to pull it out of the sheath (tight retention) and ended up cutting her fingers badly as she pulled the blade out, and to make it worse - even poke area between her thumb and index finger, as she pulled sheath with one hand and knife with other, when knife suddenly went out - her reflex was to push her hands back together so it doesn't fly out...

They aren't even together anymore, yet she still jokes about my knife giving her scars when she meets me 😂

I lost a knife fight to my mother when she was in her 80s under very similar circumstances.

My Morakniv fixed blade and Kershaw Brawler are my loaner knives. Everything else stays with me or on me lol.

Also, I don’t mind the bodily fluids thing. The blade can be washed. It would be nice to get asked though lol.

I bought once a ceramic kitchen knife to see how they work…
‘Next day we had party at home for my grand daughter. One of the guests, older guy, father of friend of ours, wanted to open a box with toys, packed with some flimsy screws on the back.
I saw him across the room in the moment he grabbed my new ceramic knife and started unscrewing those screws from the cardboard fixture…. Tip went off of course, he just looked around, left the knife back by the other knives like he never used it and grabbed another knife to finish with the screws . I didnt say anything, he didn’t mentioned either but from this moment on, I’m trying not to invite him when we gather together.

I usually carry few knives with me on a daily bases, a”working” knife as the CS GoldenEye or Voyager, or Rat1, and another, more “gentleman’s edc” oriented knife as my knives with custom scales and so.
Nobody ever gets anything but the “working” knife and this is only in the rare case when they ask for knife and I cannot do it for myself…

😂 Probably… This old dude is very good with some home made salami and pastrami, often we get game meat or just whatever he need and he makes some for us, of course we pay for the labor and everything. I lend him once my electric, almost professional meat grinder So he can do it at his home convenience. I specifically explained to him how to cut the meat chunks and to please remove as much as he can ligaments and such hard material because they will mess up the blade and everything up front…
‘He acted skeptical like they are no big deal but said it will… A week later he comes home with a new machine, same brand.
Turned out he ran the meat the way he wanted trough the grinder and it stuck, messed up,the knife and burned the motor some how, I have no idea how he managed to do it… So in shame, he just bought a new machine that he returned to me. At least it wasn’t the same case as with the ceramic knife…:thumbsup:

use one in a negligent way
I agree that user type knives are basically just tools and thus are to be used as necessary to accomplish the job / task at hand .

However , I do get bothered when people are either ignorant or just thoughtless about misusing a tool that does not belong to them .

Talking gross negligence/damage , not dulling the edge or scratching the finish .

I learned pretty early in life to trust only a very few proven individuals with anything I wasn't willing to just gift to them .

Yeah, a big part of the problem is just people who don't know what they're doing.

I'm not going to yell at someone who didn't know any better, and a lot of people don't. Better to just keep things they're not competent to use away from them. I don't let most people touch my shop tools, modest as they are, either.

Now, someone who knows better and still does it with your blade, that's different...

+1 on carrying two knives - my knife and their knife.
Though a bit much to EDC but certainly OK to have at home or at camp, A Becker BK-2 would be the loaner of loaners; hard to damage, easy to fix and great warranty.
