Knife accident--warning

Whether carrying in a pocket or clipped to a pocket, there is a lot to be said for a tip-down orientation.

ExMachina,

Sorry to hear about your cut. Hope you heal quickly with no permanent damage.

I have been cut by knives that have opened in my pocket. Usually, I reach in and the knife has opened slighltly and I nick my hand. Usually no big deal. I have since then made sure that the tip up knives are pressed against the outer seam of my front pocket.

The latest "incident" I had was with my Strider AR. I was playing frisbee with my brother. The knife was positioned against the seam in my pocket. However, I was doing a lot of running and jumping normally associated with playing frisbee that some how managed to open my knife just about half way. I knoticed a painful pricking feeling in my leg. I reached into my pocket and luckily felt that the blade was open (just about perpendicular to the handle) and slowed my hand down so I wouldn't be cut. The knife had wedged itself in my pocket to the point where I could not get the knife out without cutting a hole in my pants. That was an eye-opener...

I think having a folder in your pocket is a risk no matter what you do. Tip up/down - It doesn't matter. If you play hard, jump, roll around on the ground you risk the knife opening on you. That's why I always empty my pockets before I rough-house with my 5 year old boy. NO WAY am I going to risk the knife doing something unexpected.

I'm with Jeff on this one, it seems it is an argument in favor of point down carry. Also, running/jumping around would much more likely lead to problems with tip up carry due to gravity. Rolling around and wrestling with your kid is another matter altogether.

While I have never had one open in my pocket by itself, I have had my BM Axis lock open several times when I was pulling it out of my pocket, the thumb stud catches on the edge of the pocket. No serious cuts (yet), I just have to remember to place a finger along the spine when I pull it out.

I was wondering whether the LCC was tip up or tip down. Thanks for answering the question, Jeff. I am in agreement with you and with Don that tip down is a much safer way to carry a folder. I realize that there may be a slight sacrifice in speed, but I gladly make that sacrifice to ensure security and a whole leg and hand.

:D As a jest, I once suggested that those who believe so much in tip-up should try to carry one of Bram Frank's Guntings in that manner!:D But I can see Sal Glesser and/or Bram having heart attacks at the mere thought of that, so please don't try it.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys. They are much appreciated! :)

I must disagree about the tip up/down distinction regarding safety.

Assuming a similar type of opening in my pocket while carrying with the tip down, I would be much more likely to get injured getting undressed. Furthermore, in that case two *much worse* things could have happened:

1) The cutting would have occurred while taking off my pants and would have been much closer to major blood vessels, nerves, and sundry "dangly bits"

2) The blade would enter w/ the edge leading the way (instead of the spine as in my case), producing a gradually deepening wound.

I was wondering how long it would take to get to the tip up/tip down debate
;)

I just heard this htis morning...One of my friends got one of those cheap Kershaw knives with assisted opening. It opened up in his pocket last night...no damage though!

Hope you have a speedy recovery, Dave. I make it a point to remove all objects from my trouser pockets when I change pants (usually on arrival home).

one more reason to get yourself S2K

My Sere comes open in my pocket, and coming out of my pocket all the time. It "waves" open about half the time... I still like it a lot, but I am very careful pulling it from my pocket!
