Knife adjustment advice

The same thing happened to me, except it continued until it's unfavorable conclusion. I filed the kick down ever so slowly, checking at least 5-6 times if it had lowered the blade enough, when after the last tiny bit was removed, the blade closed enough to completely cover the nail nick! A pinhead sized speck of metal lay on the bench beside the knife, which must have been wedged into the spring/kick connection. So now I have a custom sanded toothpick wedged into the blade well to elevate the blade to the proper level.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Always thoroughly clean your knife before filing the kick! :o

ha! i wish that applied to the schatt and morgan heritage and the queen workhorse

I wish I would've saw this earlier. I bought the same knife set and it happened to me. I wasn't smart enough to file it I just assumed it was broke.

Only just seen this thread, and was about to caution blowing out the joint before resorting to filing the kick, as sometimes a 'crumb' gets left in there. Also, Taylor-Schrade sometimes put small plastic wedges under the blades to hold them open while in their packaging (there should be a warning to remove them). They certainly do this with the gifts sets.

It makes no sense to me to put plastic wedges under the blades!
Duh!! :eek:
Double Duh!!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

LOL! The knives come in tins with the blades of the knives opened at different angles to fit slots in the packaging, and the plastic wedges keep the blades in place. They're something which are easily missed, but there's usually a printed label warning you to take them out before trying to close the blades :D :thumbup:

All's well that ends well, I make it my first thing to do when it doesn't seem to close right, I get a strong penlight/LED and check the valley between the blades. Old food encrusted lint after years can dry hard and create all kinds of closing problems. I'm glad you didn't file too much away before you discovered the cause. ;)

Definitely, I found part of a 1950's tram ticket under one kick! :D

I was gunna say 'have you cleaned it?'
Before sounding the charge of the file brigade.
So is that wedge a piece of errant packaging or an actual wedge put in there for a reason .
Edit thanks JB you answered the question.

It all makes sense now. There may have been a warning on the package that I missed. The set was a gift from friends and I pocketed the folder right away because I thought something was wrong with it. I was worried about my friends feelings.
After that, I just wanted to fix it before putting it away. I appreciate all of your replies.

I think it is just a small loose slip of paper. If I find one I'll take a pic :thumbup:
