Knife advertising

The annual sales of the entire sporting knife industry wouldn't make a good month's sales at Dell Computer. A national TV ad campaign mounted by one of the knife manufacturers would simply bankrupt it. It isn't going to happen. Sorry.

Ive seen Gerber advertisments on some hunting shows. I'm not sure if it was just for the multi-tools, or knives or both.

There's a couple of professionally produced ads at the end of the Sharpmaker instructional videotape (now on DVD). Spyderco aired these ads in some local markets in Colorado back in the late 90s.

They would be perfect for some airtime on the Outdoor Channel.

I agree as to the cost/return being uneven, but if Lowe's can feature a deal on a Stanley tape measure for 5 seconds during a commercial, it would be nice if they could do the same for a folder. I would assume that most people who regularly use Stanley products would have a use for cutting tools.

It just irritates me that even in magazines such as Outside (which covers hiking, camping....albeit upper class), they have a full page add for Surefire lights, but the only knives you see are the gadget oriented knife+ caribiner types from Buck. Even the Surefire add had a tagline about scaring away Hyenas with a flashlight. Can you imagine if a knife add were to come across as aggressive like that, it would be ridiculed.

I saw a couple of the Spyderco commercials in ‘99. IIRC, they aired during sports programs and on “outdoors” type channels. The ad I remember featured a woman using a folder to cut flowers in her garden. It was very sheeple friendly.

Seeing a Spyderco commercial on TV was really weird. I did a massive double take. LOL! It was like, “Wait… did I just see what I think I saw?” :)
