Knife advice in liberal land

A Mnandi is a good choice if a locking knife is ok at your work, they will do anything you ask and are definitely well engineered:thumbup: A inlayed small Sebenza or graphic version would probably work well also.

Have you thought about leaving LA? I've lived in Southern California my whole life and every time I go to LA I can't wait to leave. I've been all over the country and can honestly say LA is my least favorite city in America. Sorry, this isn't constructive in the slightest. I just had to vent [emoji81]

What you do is put in your notice. Then show up with a Buck 110 on your belt. When you pull out the 110, open it using the one hand style only used on the 110. Be sure to wave it around inviting everyone to see what a cool knife you have. Go get on with your next career satisfied you left an impression.

Moving truck will be here 2/25. Moving from South Orange County to Coeur D'Alene!! Woo Hoo! Of course, now the minor obstacle of finding work :grumpy:

Seriously?

I'm suffering in the Los Angeles area as I am not an emasculated liberal and have an inner redneck begging to get out.

Even worse, I work in large corporations in tech. Basically, I'm looking for a knife I love that wont scare people or get me fired. It would most often be used as a tool to cut cable ties and velcro. But, I love things that are engineered well. I've been carrying around a crappy box cutter for years and I want something made with quality.

Do you guys think the Mnandi is small enough that if I pulled it out as a tool or someone saw it in my bag that they wouldn't freak out?

Also, is there a left handed version? I found one Im in love with but its $650 and its not Damascus. More than I wanted to spend but its beautiful. I figured I'd avoid Damascus since I'll actually be using it.

If you think the Mnandi is too big, any other suggestions?

Thanks for any feedback.

My business is a mix of the tech, creative and legal industries. I EDC both a Leatherman Wave AL on my hip and pocket carry a large ZT. I only pull out a knife when it is appropriate to do so, and when it is appropriate to do so, I usually receive thanks and sometimes admiration of the knife itself.

Every now and then a "soccer mom" type's eyes will get a little wide when they see me pull the big knife out, but that never lasts long once they see that I'm using it to cut zip ties or open a box.

Remember, the knife laws here are extremely generous, and tech industry is absolutely FULL of gadget geeks. A folding knife is the original gentlemen's gadget. Once they see you with one, they're all going to want one.

Hey, in the same boat, tech company in Norcal. I leave my knife in the car. (I feel so bad, like neglecting a puppy/kitty) Check out your code of conduct, and if they are vague and say 'no weapons' ask your HR department. I know some companies see ANY knife as a weapon, and the same with tactical pens. I still carry a leatherman ps style, since there is no blade, and a few tools that are similarly knife-less (a mini prybar, flashlight, etc.). You don't want to get caught with something your work thinks is a weapon, so just ask them what is acceptable or not. I live in NorCal, and have had people freak out over a 2in knife in public before, and you being in LA, have much stricter laws (a 3 in limit etc.) I strongly advise you check your local laws if you are in LA (because I carry sub 3in in LA). CA has pretty good knife laws, just the people are a bit knife-shy. So just be extra careful. I did just order a fancy box cutter, I am hoping will not scare people. Olfa 26B utility knife. Yes I am going to go through the proper channels to ask. Sigh, it is what it is.

The only 3" limit is for fixed blades, and fixed blades must be open carry. There is no limit on folders.

Let's keep the discussion about knives and not about people.. If you wan't to single out a group of people, there are forums here for that purpose and it is not this one.

If you read the whole thread, you would know I have already addressed this..

I work IT in education and typically carry a GEC 45, Spydie dragonfly, or small sebenza with the clip removed. The key is to be careful not to be too obvious about having a knife. I use mine for the task at hand and put it away promptly. I've had a person flip out of the opinel I used to carry, but after quickly explaining I wasn't about to break a key opening boxes even that nutter understood.

I also looked hard at Mnandis since they're soo darn pretty, but I also throw the pocket clip on and use the small seb outside work for some occasionally rough stuff that I didn't want to subject a Mnandi too. The pointy stout tip on the Seb makes it great for poking/proding things, for that reason I didn't go with an insignio since I do that kinda a lot. Popping off covers on drops, re-bending tiny metal bits, stuff like that. If you want a CRK alternative I've found the GEC 45 viper to be an idea IT tool, paired up with a LM juice or something similar.

When around skittish people I think it's best to err on the side of gaudy. Maybe a Mnandi with wood scales and D.T damascus. Glinting blades=more threatening, wood=bourgeois and 'old-timey'. The D.T damascus performs quite well.

I carry a small sebenza 21. Nobody comments or looks at me funny when I pull it out. Just get what you want and use it. It's a pocket knife not a machine gun.

Sorry to drift again from the CRK subject, but it s been my impression that black coated blades used for routine edc tasks draw less unfavorable attention from non knife people than shiny satin blades and other non coated steel blades.

.

I have worked like 25 years as a tech manager and system admin both in SoCal and Washington State. A Mnandi would be fine and start around $350 and go up from there. I have carried knives from age 10. Also in a CRK a Inkosi or small 21 would work just fine. I would say any thing that is 3" or less should be fine. IF you are really worried carry a swiss army knife...

LOL, thanks for so clearly clarifying the challenge of being around hypersensitive people.
No problem. Not really a challenge, though, right? Seems you're just scared of what some people might do or say if you carry a pocket knife. That shouldn't be an issue, since you're not emasculated... Right?
