Knife and MT for Soldier

I would recommend a Busse for the fixed blade. They are bomb proof. And I mean literally bomb proof. They are also bullet proof (there is one that stopped a .40 round that hit a guy in the chest).

They are guaranteed forever, no matter how many times they change hands. If he ever manages to break it, they replace it (as long as he does not cut it in half with a torch).

You can get them several places.

from the same family of knives are the Scrapyard and Swamprat both bomb proof, but more affordable.

Lots of good suggestions, thanks. I hadn't thought of the SAK, but it makes perfect sense as a pocket knife for the reasons mentioned. I've got one that I bought brand new a year or so ago, and I think I'll hand it to him.

I still think the Core is the way to go; the Swiss Army MT is a beast, but it's not a true needlenose plier, and the screwdrivers are terrible, IMO.

Thanks again.

I understand, from Marines that I have talked to, that Fixed Blades see little use. The most used item are their Multi-Tools (good ones include- Waves, Charge Ti, SOGs). I think a SKeletool would be ideal because of the decreased weight, better blade design/material, and clip to prevent loss. I recommend engraving their name on it, because things tend to either get lost or "borrowed", and the ID may help it return to it's proper owner. My son ( a Marine) has enjoyed Emerson knives, and a Spyderco Military. Having lost a couple of knives, he began using a lanyard to reduce the chance of loss.
For his next deployment I'm going to make sure to send him with a couple of Sporks, as well.

My son is a Marine and his favorite tools are a Leatherman Charge and a Benchmade 556 Mini-grip.

As important as a knife is, flashlights are also critical.

Take a look at some Fenix flashlights, especially the ones that use a CR123 battery. My son says they get them for free.

I did 15 months there, and 12 in Iraq, I MT and Tactical Folder is all he will need, I carried a Core and a Spyderco Military, worked very good and I came back with both.

I like the Leatherman Wave  Great Multi-tool ! As for a Fixed blade if you are going to get him one & you don't want to spend alot of $$$ for something he might or might not use the get him a KA-BAR/Becker BK-7
& for a Good Folder Kershaw/Zero Tolerance A.K.A ZT knives - ZT Mudd or ZT0200. As for the light try - INOVA - X5
