I see a growing trend of knives up for auction, why is this?

Look on Facbook, Instagram and other forums, there seems to be at least 1 or 2 auctions a week!!

Ones for a charity cause I understand and think they are great!! But one that are just up for auction are the ones I am curious about.

Is it just for the greed of the maker? Seeing how much he can get for said knife?

I am not pointing out anyone, just in general!

What your thoughts?

I think makers finally figured out that they can make substantially more profit in an auction, with no dealer fees or anything. And it's not like they have anything to feel bad about either, since they're only selling the knife for what people are willing to pay.

Yup supply and demand. Eventually just crashes the market and the people who paid a lot will loose a lot. It is the circle of business. The only way to stop it is when the market for that maker or knife crashes. It has happened before and it always will.

I really don't like when a maker puts a knife up for sale without an asking price. Instead of setting a fair price hes looking for the "best" offer. So essentially
looking for someone to over pay. And there are plenty of people out there that don't seem to care if they over pay by hundreds of dollars. Auctions put
customers up against each other making them essentially go to battle for a knife. I don't like it either.

There are other forums that allow anyone to auction their knives and gear, not just knife makers. I see nothing wrong with it at all, if you do not like it, you don't have to bid.

I'm pretty active on Instagram, and I've noticed this as well. For the most part, I don't think it's abused. If you look at makers like Frank Fischer and Michal Gavac (Gavko), they use it fairly. For instance Frank and Mike recently did a collaboration of sorts, Mike gave Frank the raw cut parts, and Frank ground, shaped, and fitted the knife. There are two in existence, and both were auctioned. If a maker is taking a standard model and just putting it up for auction, I think that's being a bit greedy. If they make the knife unique, add some interesting materials or do an off the wall grind, that's fine by me. "What's the best way to make a million dollars making knives? Start with two million". Shit happens, if a maker needs extra cash to make ends meet, who's to judge? That's my two cents on the subject at least. :)

Doesn't an auction determine the real market value, instead of someone assigning a value based on some opinion?

Not always. Limited availability, exclusivity, and the auction itself lend the potential for impulse shopping and the price is usually driven up. I've seen this happen before, followed by around 100+ bids.

Diesel Joe we meet at blade ...I was with new bob... He told me about you selling some knives to fund a project... noticed this thread figured I'd give an idea.. lots are doing raffles with good success. Just a thought on a way to get what you are asking for your knives. Check instagram out.

I think now days with the internet and folks keeping up some, including knife forums like this one. If a maker would over abuse something like this, trying to be greedy, folks would kind of find that out. Some I have seen, raffles, and auctions seem to go fairly well.
Just my opinion.

I don't see a problem with the auctions, but the raffles confuse me. I see lot of them going on but aren't they equivalent to running an illegal lottery (a felony)?

Something like that. Paypal has already stepped in and won't let money be sent if the word "raffle" is mentioned at all.

I have heard of a few raffles where the person holding it had there Paypal account frozen. It's big on Instagram, since they dont really inforce anything on there, anything goes!!
