Knife blade finish repair??

A couple of questions, what wording should I use to search for this: I have a blade that was somewhat roughly sharpened and want to attempt to restore some of the blades finish/polish?

I am not a bladesmith and have never made a knife (would be fun, though), how where blades finished/polished before modern thin belt sanders/grinders?

Many Thanks, just starting down this road. :):):)

Pictures would help. Is it just the edge or the whole blade bevel? What kind of grind is it also? Sandpaper might be your best bet, depending on the finish you're going for. You can convex a blade for instance using sandpaper with a mousepad for backing (the thicker kind of mousepad ideally). There are lots of youtube videos on that process.

Thanks,

My Dad was a woodworker/carpenter and sharpened the knife as he would any handplane blade/chisel, by hand with stones. Puma White Hunter from about 1968 sharpened maybe once.

As I told you on another forum, these particular knives were hard chrome plated. They can not be properly refinished without complete disassembly, stripping the plating with acid, repolishing the blade, and replating it. I do knife restoration (and some plating) for a living. You are better off leaving the knife alone. Just use it and enjoy it. Facts are facts, no matter who you ask.

Hi Mr. Bill DeShivs,

Puma Knives' directed me to there repair guy, this guy does all Puma fixed blade knife work in the U.S. of A. Puma's repair man said that this is "NOT" hard chrome and a puma knife collector said the same thing. Sir, please keep in mind I bought this Puma White Hunter (with Pumamaster Steel and the little hardness test) for my Dad sometime in 1968.

Bill DeShive you and these other guys could easely both be correct; I have a feeling the manufactures quality standards may have changed.

Now having said that, you have hit at the heart of my question; I'm a tool user, I wonder who used tools before me, I believe a craftsman may impart something of themselfs to there tools. This knife was one of the nicest gifts I ever gave my Dad. I would like to use it or pass it on. I could also buy a ESEE-4 (SS or CS) and not use the White Hunter. I also have a Puma Game Warden folder and the Puma Skinner. For the amount of $$$ to restore the WH I can come very close to getting the ESEE-4.

Bill if you respond please add comments regarding the ESEE-4 (lime green/orange) vs the ESEE-4p-SS. Thank you

I have no knowledge of the ESEEs.
Could you post a picture of your Puma?

Hand sand with patience. Many items on this forem on hand sanding.
Get a sanding block that fits the bevel if it isn´t flat ground

Hand sanding hard chrome is an exercise in futility. You might get through it in some spots, but you can't remove it all without totally disassembling the knife. The steel is a different color, so any bare areas will show.
