I'm new to knife buying and I'm wondering about a knife I found on a online store called thinkgeek, and I was drawn into one of there new items labeled as a fixed blade (is that a hunting knife?) Sure it looks cool but I'm wondering about quality, it's called a Tiger Defender 9" Fixed Blade, for I know it's as good as a novelty item

The Deadpool bunny with a machine gun is a bit more expensive but overall a better choice.

Mtech is on the lower end in terms of quality, most of the cost of the knife goes into the design rather than the materials, so it's going to be on the cheap side in regards to materials. I've not owned any Mtech knives but I would recommend buying something a little more reputable like Kershaw/Buck/Ka-bar unless you are looking more for a show knife.

Thinkgeek is a great site, but not a knife oriented one. Many here would gladly help you find a good knife, but you'll need to post some more info first.

Folding or fixed blade?
Price range?
Use? - What are you cutting, sometimes what type of area you find yourself in helps (Office, fields, woods, military, space, etc.)

It says it has a full tang, which is usually a good thing for more rugged use. Unfortunately it says it has "440 stainless steel." While many very nice knives are made in 440C, since it doesn't specifically state what kind of 440 I'm guess it's 440A, probably badly treated, so edge retention and overall quality would stink.

Well, i've been camping recently and i'm missing some equipment one being a knife, so a knife for camping, so it doesnt have to be something crazy yet id prefer affordable yet efficient, the price range would be up to around 40 for know, something simple. And something better in the future

For a budget friendly camping knife I'd suggest a Mora Companion. Easily one of the best fixed blades for camping and they just happen to be very affordable.

They come in different colors too. With 40 I'd also consider picking up a leatherman wingman too as they're very handy and also fairly affordable.

That' really nice, i do indeed like that, and the price is great thanks a lot! Now for future reference what would be a more expensive camping knife?

Options start opening up with the more money a person is willing to spend. Typically; companies like ESEE, Becker, Battle Horse knives, Bark River Knife and Tool, and boatloads of other companies, I would suggest you look around the subforums at the various picture threads and see what draws your eye. For something a bit different than Mora but also budget friendly you can look at the knives Condor makes. Typically they're very simple carbon steel (which will rust, but its no big deal to take care of), with wood handles and leather sheaths.

Alright cool, thanks for your help EricV, im going to start off with the mora knife for starters, and look for more expensive things later on, and thanks for recommending the leathermen wingman, almost forgot about those

Anytime, be sure to come back and let us all know what you think about it when you get it.

FWIW - that Mora was the first one I bought too. I say first, because now I have about a dozen different Moras, all over the house, in the cars and in my shop. For the cost, they are excellent blades that will take a scary edge.

I personally camp with the Morakniv Bushcraft, which is like a companion on steroids. Great knife.

Enjoy your companion!

I've purchased two knives from ThinkGeek, both transactions were smooth. They're a good retailer, even if they don't specialize in knives.

There is a search function in this forum - please use it. Chances are you'll be able to answer the question yourself.
