Knife carry when wearing an overnight pack?

On my belt, strongside, I wear my multi-tool around 3 o'clock, and the fixed blade between 1 and the multi-sheath.

Put it on your chest. It's always accessible, won't go under your leg when sitting, you can run screaming from a bear safely, and even sleep with it on.

I make a kinda loop lanyard out of a piece of parachute cord, loop it around the belt on my hiking pants, and stick the knife and sheeth in my pocket.

This is exactly what I do. The additional advantage is, for example when canoeing, you can change the position of the knife from your back pocket to the cargo pocket (or any other for that matter), so as not to interfere.

Although I think the drop leg idea is a good one, it's a little too tactical looking for a lot of places.

I've been carrying my neck knife on paracord but in a different way. I make a handcuff knot and put both loops around each arm/shoulder. The center knot is at the top of my back (bottom of neck) and the cord doesn't really touch the sides of my neck at all (impossible to see under a shirt). Once you lock the knot into place (after adjusting the knots to a comfortable level) it is very secure and very comfortable :D

The knife is hanging in a sheath (point up) under my right arm pit. It's easly reached by either hand and is by far my favorite way to carry a small FB.

I'm big on the drop leg, like Flix... The Sheeple I run into on the trails barely notice, and if they do, they don't say anything. I Currently use a modified A7-T sheath from Okuden (Oku here in the forums).

 HAHAHA! I wouldn't say anything to you either Mike! ;) I may just run fast in the opposite direction... :D
Awesome sheath... Oku does great work.

I'd go with the chest rig, like so.

Thanks for that, Robert H. It would be very handy. Unfortunately, where I hike a lot, has a fair bit of hiker traffic and if anybody spotted me wearing it, I could quickly become a guest of the city. :(

It certainly would work when canoeing out in the boonies, though.

Forgot to mention:

I also carry my blade on some cordage across my shoulder (across the chest, like a satchel, with blade under the arm). You can still wear it this way when you've got a pack on too, and it's even less conspicuous than on the belt usually. The blade doesn't really get in the way of anything, and it can be easily accessed or even removed entirely without hassle.

I just use a folder clipped into my cargo pocket. I tried carrying a fixed blade on my belt with a pack but forget-it, it's doesn't work, not even the drop thing or dangle sheath. Griptilian in the cargo pocket works best.

How do you carry a handgun holster if you are wearing a backpack that has a back-belt?

Well, I've done that a couple of different ways. Shoulder holsters work. Drop leg holsters work. Tanker chest holsters work. Cross-draw holsters work. Attaching a holster to the shoulder strap can work.

When I wore IBA regularly, I attached a flap holster for my M9 to the attachment points in a position similar to the Tanker chest holster. Other times, I just used a drop leg holster on my LBE -- that kept it out of the way of the Alice pack or whatever other load I was wearing. Anything that gets it off the belt can work. You have to experiment a bit to see what will work for you. Drop leg holsters are not my favorite, but they work very well, and put the gun right under your hand.

I actually prefer the chest position, because it's less likely to get hung up on stuff. I'm not fond of the concept of attaching to the shoulder strap of your pack, because you might dump the pack in a hurry, and there goes your weapon. I prefer it attached to me, so I am really fond of the tanker holsters. They can ride under other loading equipment. Not a fast draw system, they are for secure packing of a gun in tight quarters, and not getting hung up on stuff.

Folder in pocket, fixed blade in pack.
OR
Folder in pocket. fixed blade on full webbing kit (simmilar to ALCE), pack on back, earplugs in ears (to block out everyone elses laughing)

Good Thread

I liked the dangling sheath idea, so I started a leather one last night for my Koster K-Ugly. I'll have to post up some pics when I finish tonight.

By the way, it's nice to be able to draw from the collective wisdom of a ton of people here who all know more than me! :)
