Recommendation? Knife cases

I use briefcases. Haliburton if i find one, Samsonite works well too. Buy the foam for $10-15 (enough to do half a dozen) and the case for $5-10 second hand. Used camera cases are good too, and cheap.

I know it’s impolite to ask what someone paid, but could you give me a ballpark figure for what such an exquisite chest would cost? I’ve looked on eBay and they seem to be around $400-$600…but not in the condition of yours. Did you refurbish it? Are the drawers dovetailed? And are they on wooden glides or some other material? Sorry for so many questions, but your suggestion really taps into my past love of cabinet (furniture making - which I did completely with hand tools). I have an affinity and weakness for such items that, if not hand-built, exhibit a quality not found on current production pieces coming out of China. Thanks very much for your posting.
It is ok to ask, I spent about $700 on it fully restored. It was originally made in the 50s, only problem was after I bought this one I started looking for other ones in different sizes and vintages. You are right they are available in all sorts of condition and a wide range of prices. The Gerstner brand ones are the classic, still in business today, making two lines one here in the US and a cheaper one made in China called Gerstner International. The US made ones are fairly expensive and beautiful but honestly they are not quite as well made as the old ones. On the old ones the box is fully dovetailed with solid wood, the drawers are wooden for all the sides but have a metal bottom. The corners of the drawers are kind of dovetail, all super well made. My other two cases are from the 30's and 40's, amazing how well the old ones were made, mostly quarter sawn oak, veneer only used on the back. I use my other two for some photo stuff and as a misc storage. I love this one too from the 30s.Gertstner O31A.jpg

My collection is currently filling my storage bags, and I’d like a recommendation for a good Pelikan-esque container that holds 40-50 folders. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Travel isn’t an issue; it’s more a desire to consolidate in one place.
I'll second the Nalpack recommendation. I don't know if they make a larger insert but this 21 knife insert already has the slots cut out and it works great. Great quality foam too.
