Knife Catalogs

So, the handles on the Economy range come in both textured nylon and smooth cellidor, I didn't know that.

Tardis,

I still have one of those "budget" Victorinox SAKs
(I use the word "budget" just to distinguish it from the (nylon) Economy line - I'm not sure if this was a Victorinox term).

In fact it was my first real EDC - a "budget" Waiter model -
standard red Cellidor scales (no tools in the handles) - but the logo was press-in silver printing as opposed to embedded metal

If you're dubious that this knife had been my EDC for over 6 years - when the handles still look pretty nice and the only evidence seems to be that the logo has worn off.......
Well, I found that one could polish the Cellidor handles with car polish and bring them back. Deeper scratches could be minimized by using metal polish or even the rougher car rubbing compound - then finished off with good car polish.
(The logo was not the usual scalloped shield - but a much simpler regular rounded triangular shield with Swiss cross).

Just as a note of interest the Combo tool on this model is the older version - see detailed discussion of the Combo Tool in this thread (linked):

Here's a nice Kershaw catalog - it's a current one too - so it's not just oldies are the goodies either :D :D

you psychic bastids!

i was just coming here to post about catalogs

perhaps i'll need to make a new thread tho, because this one is in a different direction. I'm seeking current catalogs, from distributors, retailers, wholsalers, but not really from manufacturers.

What i was hoping is that you guys would point me to several places offering free (or paid) catalog subscriptions. I don't mind paying for a substantial catalog, i'm aware of the costs in producing them...
that said, it must be worthwhile buying.

i'm signed up with US Cav, SMKW, Brig. Quartermasters, but there's gotta be more out there. anyplace dealing with general surplus is also good.

Also..
I'm thinking of perhaps setting up a stand at the local flea market, Seems that good stuff is lacking here, and i may be able to fund my own addiction to some point. Any wholesale houses/distributors would be very helpfull, feel free to email me of course. I've already got a Tax ID, i just never really looked into this as far as flea markets and gun shows were concerned. I may even go for a dealer FFL.

My business has sucked pretty bad this last year, maybe it's time to re-evaluate the situation. Any feedback on the idea would also be appreciated.

The major knife shows are very good places to pick up catalogs - although they probably are mostly from manufacturers.

For example I have a bunch picked up at the Blade Show from 1999 - 2003, (except for 2002 when I screwed up on the dates and didn't realize until the Tuesday AFTER the show was over! :o  )

Some individual knifemakers have catalogs - like Chris Reeve, Ernie Emerson and I think Allen Elishewitz.

If you look in the back of those Knives 'XX books (edited by Ken Warner 1980-2000, and Joe Kertzman 2001-current) there are directories of mailorder sales, importers etc - that's probably a good source to start inquiries for non-manufacturers' catalogs.

Does the Cutlery Shoppe still have a printed catalog?
They used to be brilliant - one of the very best -
in fact, I used to get a lot of my information/specs from their catalog.

One of my most prised cat's.
Valor Cutlery 1984.

Glad you showed it again - that cover is a treasure -
(did the Kershaw Rainbow Leek action/multi-image remind you of it?)
but is that really the jaggy title/heading? (what a shame if it is....:( )

If I might take the liberty - crosman177 also posted this link in another thread
of this truly beautiful almost "Ferrari-like" Wenger SAK catalog
(yeah, you knew I'd get back to SAKs somehow :D )
Wenger Catalog

I have a couple of SAK leaflet/catalogs in spanish, one Wenger, one Victorinox, don´t remember how old they are, maybe two or three years.

I also have a Puma catalog from 1977 with an included price list from somewhere in the U.S.

I still need a new scanner for pictures (my old one is broken).

I only have Spyderco catalogs. Joyce at PR is a very nice person and they ship worldwide. Not to mention their products rocks!

I searched for Puma and ran across this thread.
It seems you guys are looking for information, thru catalogs on SAK's. I have them pictured in catalogs from 1967 (3 pages) thru at least 1982 (5 pages).
If any of you guys what copies of the catalog pages let me know and I can copy and fax or send them to you.

Ken,

Thanks - yes I would be extremely interested in seeing these older SAK catalogs - especially if they are dated (many of my Victorinox (international) catalogs don't have dates on them).

For example I just recently came across this pamphlet -
fbe05c0e.jpg

which I think I picked up about 1988/89

It has my first EDC (bought Jan/1982) the "budget" Waiter pictured (lower knife) #2.06 00
fbe05c0c.jpg

...and the upper knife #2.05 11 is probably the PLumberJack with cellidor scales that Don Luis (and maybe Frank K) have - see this thread - Minimalist SAKs

and both have this older styled Combination tool -
fbe05380.jpg

see this link My EDC Story - Victorinox Combo Tool Story

So either I got my date for acquiring this catalog completely wrong -or these Economy Victorinoxes continued from the early through to the late 80's - using older styled tools like the Combination tool and the sewing eye-less reamer.......

Ken/PumaOnly sent me photocopies of the SAK pages from his catalogs (many thanks Ken) -
and they are very interesting -

1967:

1976:
fbd3f243.jpg

1982:
fbd3f166.jpg

The interesting part about those above 3 pages are
1967 - Victorinox is being called "Genuine" SAK
1976 - they are called the "Original" SAK (as per agreement with Wenger - who are now called the "Genuine" SAK)

Some details:

1967 Champion:
fbd3f24c.jpg

1976 Champion:
fbd3f241.jpg

1982 Champion:
fbd3f163.jpg

Champions -
1967 - doesn't seem to have a corkscrew - that might be a Phillips driver. Single leaf scissors spring (as opposed to the current folded version). Clip point small blade. and I don't know what that long thin thing is on the back of the knife. Notice the shackle/bail.

1976 - adds magnifying glass and Phillips in handle. The corkscrew is on the back. Small pen blade. Keyring is the current shape.

1982 - looks like the same as the 1976.

1967 Tinker:
fbd3f245.jpg

(catalog listing says 3 1/2" but photo shows it to be smaller than others - so 3 1/4"? or 84mm)

1976 Tinker:
fbd3f169.jpg

1982 Tinker:
fbd3f161.jpg

Tinkers -

1967 - I'm pretty sure this is an 84mm model. Clip point small blade. Square section Phillips (corkscrew replacement) driver. No toothpick or tweezers in handle.

1976 - looks the same as the 1967 - although item 7 file is a bit of a mystery, unless one of the tools (like the Phillips stem) is textured to be a file? (I note other SAKs with the Phillips corkscrew replacement driver also list the file.

1982 - looks the same - except the Phillips now has the can-key. No file and adds toothpick and tweezers in handle.
