Knife Collecting A Lifetime Disease

Steve... didn't know you had skills as a knife re-handler. I'm trying to put some Ivory scales on an old Frontier lockback now.

Good luck with your Frontier! Are you using real ivory, or ivory micarta? Should look great regardless. I really like micarta, it's not too bad to work with.
I'm still starting out, but have had decent luck so far! I want to grind some blades one of these days, maybe this summer. I have some D2 just waiting to be turned into a 5-inch pac knife!

Here's a link to another site with pics of a Russell green river patch knife I put a micarta handle on. I'm going to do something similar, but with maroon linen micarta, to my Sharpfinger. I'll post pics when I get done. I'm also gonna try to re-do my Middleman, in Oak or micarta, not sure which yet...

Patch knife link

I already have the delrin off of the sharpfinger, when I get time I'll get busy on it. :)

Steve,

That's wild!! I made that exact same patch knife for my father a few years back. Different handles, though. He used to shoot black powder, but can't anymore. He still uses the knife down in his shop, though.

I think I got that one out of Jansky's catalog.

Nice knife...

Glenn

Steve that is cool. I like it a lot. Interesting reading about your working the micarta. I got my Ivory from Warther's, in Ohio, I think. Real elephant stuff.

Glenn, a few posts back you show us some nice old fixed blades. I like the Candy stripe. What kinda knife is that? I like the washer style handles, leather or color plastic, plexiglas, whatever.

Phil

Phil,

Believe it or not, that is a schrade walden (the pattern number escapes me at this moment, sorry). I had seen a few of these floating around on ebay recently, so I had to have one. Cool pattern, I'm sure LT could enlighten us some more.

Here are 5 of my fixed blades, and three ping pong balls for forum content LOL.

Left to right, an Othelo with integral guard and pomel, a Muela with stag, a small Boker with stacked leather, a William Rodgers with jigged hard rubber and blade blued with a gun blue kit, and a Buck 119 with lanyard.

I include three diferent sizes of ping pong balls. the old 38 mm, the new 40 mm and a rare 45 mm which was tried years ago but didn´t go.

Comments on the Knives: Beauties! Love the Buck.

Comments on the Ping Pong Balls....
(modesty prevents me from asking the obvious questions)

Now that was an informative post!!!

The knives are quite nice......
I have a Muela very similar to the Gredos model. It is very nice, as well.
I also have a 119, and I like your lanyard setup alot.

Oh, strictly for forum content, thanks for the examples of the ping pong balls. Very interesting what one can learn here. You mention that the 45mm was tried and didn't "Go".......... Where didn't it "Go", If I may inquire?

Bill

Some may think that the bigger the ping pong balls the better, maybe tough for players but more interesting for spectators. The need for bigger balls came with the invention of better rubbers (I am, of course reffering to the rubber used as cover of ping pong paddles), 45 mm balls may seem atractive but are not easy to maneuver, and make it much harder to use spin and do all those tricks that good players can do.

No more so as not to hijack the thread.

So what your really saying is that size does matter and bigger is not always better? Better rubber doesn't always give better traction? More bounce to the ounce. Oh I gotta stop.

OH MY,

As you can see I've covered us for 4 posts in the title....... :D

Thanks so much for the history/engineering lesson. You guys are on a roll!

There's really nothing to compare to an Old Timer and his ping pong balls. Two great hobbies! Come to think of it, that monkey's fist has got to fit in the equation somewhere, no?

I was away for a day. I heard of a couple of Schrade items for sale and met the gentleman at Foxwoods to buy them I have included pics. But first the Candy stripe Schrade Walden is a 147 pattern. I have included some pics one is a hollow handle plastic which was the forerunner of staglon it is hollow and lighter. The leather is a 49 er series which was a definite upgrade solid with a brass butt plate but the same pattern.. These two are in the 147 pattern the other is a hollow handled Imperial. It is not a 147 pattern. However is included as a similar style handle to the one in the ori pic. Again they are all cousins.

It was a good trip I got the display cases, tried out the new RV ( shakedown trip ) and played poker. LT
