Yea - I love knives too - but after all - most all of them, after you look at them and play with them - go sit in a drawer ( unless you like to display them).
They cost money and keep costing you money which you could save or spend on something else - but better to save!
So - for those too hooked on them - consider the above - collect a few good ones and stop! - at least for awhile (he he) - take a break!
After all - how many knives can you use or play with at one time ?
There are only so many really nice knives anyway - the rest are crap!
How many knives can you carry ? - Yea - its nice to switch off on the old EDC - but there are only 7 days in the week ! How long do you have to wait until you see the same knife again ? Just because everybody else on the forums has this particular knife - doesn't mean you have to get one! ( or does it? - he he ) - If thats the problem - stop reading the forums for awhile - read a news forum - there is nothing there to buy !
Bye

I agree, I think I've bought the folks at New Graham a new car in the past few months. :)

Just a slight change in irabren's wording reflects my own feelings on this>>

"There are so many really nice knives!"

I promised myself a couple months back that I'd only buy a few and not "collect". I have stayed true to that and I use my knives. I see no reason not to use a great tool. You don't go buying Snap-On screwdrivers to save in a drawer now do you? Why do it with knives?

Or just do what I do and keep an ever rotating group of about 10 nice knives around. When I buy a new one I force myself to sell one of the ones I dont use much anymore.

I did that to some BM balisongs and lost out big time. BM discontinued them and they're now worth more than twice what I paid for them. :(

Maybe I should stop selling them? :)

An interesting exercise in deconstruction!
How about this, then:
Buying into what they tell you in news forums can be much more costly and dangerous and unpleasant than knifecollecting...
Or how about this:
to a true knife addict, irabren's advice would mean harakiri!

I have 8 BMs that I rotate, and some SAKs and crapppy old stuff.... I do not buy knives very often, so the fun for me is planning for the next one. It may be six months, but I think about which one I want next, and that is the fun for me.

I buy in spurts, as my finances allow. Last year I was able to accumulate 90 knivse, this year only a few so far. It's not a problem - no money, no knives. As simple as that.

how many knives can you use or play with at one time ?
500? 1,000? I'll let you know when I get there.

How many knives can you carry ?
I carry exactly one knife, when I remember. It's a knife I bought for that exact purpose, and in case I lose it, there's a duplicate in my "collection" for safe-keeping.

There are only so many really nice knives anyway - the rest are crap!
Since new knives are being made every day, the number of "nice" knives is potentially endless. But you're right, there is a lot of crap too. Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference, until the UPS truck arrives.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

True....... but there are 365 days in a year! :p :D

I actually haven't bought any new knives this year yet because of $$. I even sold a few that I didn't really like any more or use much. I've been making a point to use all the ones I still have very thoroughly and get to know all their best characteristics.

I'm in the very same boat with you. It's really not that bad either. Only difference is that I have 2 Benchmade's and about 6 SAK's and a Buck.

You know, I tried collecting and it just didn't work for me. I have only about 4-6 folders and 3-4 fixed blades. I use them a lot as they're all in my EDC box. I plan on getting key ones, but from the disappointments I've received with certain knives I'm just not into accumulating knives. For example, on the horizon I hope to add 4 more higher-end knives folders (all customs), and a fixed blade. I always end up pulling out my knives and asking myself if another knife is really going to be that much better than the ones I already have. In fact, most of the knives I have are for sentimental reasons or because I helped design them. Knives are cool, but there's always a new cool one coming out so I won't try to keep up. Of course, if you think KNIVES are bad for your income, try watches!!!

Edited to add: I found Buzzbait's analysis of his time away from BF VERRRY interesting. If you haven't read it, you should give it a try!

There's some good advice here. First off, spending a lot of time in this forum is only going to make you find knives you like. If you have a weakness that borders on compulsion (and is causing financial issues) then you probably need to stay away. Like it or not, that's true. We all have vices, or at least most of us do. I smoke. Should I quit? Yes. Will I? Someday, hopefully. Should I stop buying knives? Probably. Will I? When there aren't any knives left that would be a useful addition to the knives I already own. I'm thinking that means I'll stop buying knives when I die of lung cancer.

What a bunch of clever comments !!
Yup - its true - since new knives are coming out all the time - and since there are soo many nice ones - you will never be able to get them all - so why bother ! - Of course there is a big difference between buying once in awhile and planning carefully for the next one - this can be fun - but is not a compulsive addiction. Also - consider how many times an impulsive knife purchase turned out sour and you didn't like the knife - so why take chances!

Why not? What are you saving for, a big fancy funeral?

when i buy a new knife i immediately want to go get another one instead of wait and plan. its like at wal mart the other day...i had to see if they had any good natives...they did and i bought it....now why do i really need 2??
