Knife collection "must have" knives???

I hate to post another thread like this, but it isn't quite the same as the rest. Since my son was born (actually since I found out we were pregnant with a boy, I didn't even wait for birth!) I've started collecting knives to pass on to him when he is old enough. So far, he has a Buck 110, 119, 303, and 112 and 110 collector's tins from Christmas-time. I plan to get him every American made Christmas tin knife, but I'm at somewhat of a loss as far as what else his collection really needs. I know he needs a good SAK, and I like the Victorinox Tinker for that spot, but after that I'm stuck. His second birthday is coming up and if there are several good ideas I'll make a list for future birthdays and other occasions. I considered ordering a Randall, but I don't consider that a "must have," and I don't think I'm patient enough to wait for one. Also, I'm not looking for anything that high dollar. If I was going to spend that much I'd get him another gun! Thanks in advance for any info and advice!!!

Spyderco Endura or Mili

Maybe get him full SE also...... he might like full SE if given the chance.

Then every knife'er needs a delica, wait Caly3. Maybe a CV case? Na.. Thats so last year... Maybe a Mini Skirmish? Or, how about a nice fixed blade? Mmmm a Sebenza might be a good investment? You know they dico'ed the reg? I bet you could still land a large bluestud and spacer! :D

Ha, ha

Good luck! :D

You have to also get a Griptilian of some sort, and something from Kershaw/Ken Onion, it's good for the soul.

Oh and don't forget an RC-3 or RC-4.

my opinion .. is different .. better to give him a nice custom one ... I recommend: a small custom mayo wharny. Not only it's nice .. but the value is up over the years.

Nice collectors knives:
Hackman survival knife
Hackman red handled or black handled folding knife
Tapio Wirkkala puukko. Also Hackman.

A Case CV, whether it be red bone, amber bone or yellow Delrin.
A Leatherman, preferably with locking tools.
A Delica or Endura.
A stout fixed blade with carbon steel, perhaps a Marble's from AG Russel, a Bark River Boone, or a Blackjack Trailguide.
A quality, American hatchet.

Then, teach him to use and care properly for each one.

How about leave some money for college :p

Yes, when I was going to school I'd much prefer to have the results of a few hundred dollars invested for 18 years than a handful of old school knives.

I agree , plus a huge collection of "collectors" knives might not mean as much to your son in the future as giving him one single knife you cherished.

On the other hand. Starting up a collection of "average" knives in NIB condition he might sell them for profit in 20 years and make more money than investing in real estate or just burning the money.

KaBar USMC Fighting&Utility

Anything from Busse Combat, Scrap Yard, Swamp Rat, Rat Cutlery, Fehrman, ROSarms, and Zero Tolerance.

Matt,traditional pattern slipjoints,from quality Co's like Case,Queen & Schatt & Morgan
Anton said a good one,a custom warny Mayo..
A small custom or high end fixed blade,to test the waters & see if he is attracted to straight knives,w/the time comes. Some knifenuts only collect straight knives
A Benchmade Bob Lum mini Dejavoo is a must have for him
Starter knives would be the smaller Kabar Dozier lockbacks, and I hear they are making them in bright colors, coming soon
AG Russell just re-vamped the "Hunters Scalpel" this would be a great little fixed blade
A few vintage slipjoints, while you can still get some
