Knife collection "must have" knives???

A Buck 119 - $34 at Wally World. Better yet, get a 119BR - the dress-up brass & rosewood variant - $50-$75 - and too pretty to use.

I had considered ordering a custom 110, but I don't want to have too many duplicates without a good selection first (that being said, if I see a custom 110 and don't have to wait for it I'll probably be all over it!). To clarify what I'm looking for, I guess you could say I want "everyday" knives. I don't hunt, so some knives or types of knives are just too impractical. I have tried REALLY hard to like Spyderco, but I just don't (the Caly III is somewhat tempting, but that's about it). I would like to get another Mini Skirmish like the one I foolishly traded, it was smoother than my Sebenza. Thanks for all the info and suggestions, and please keep them coming!

1) A Busse Battle Mistress (Sheer power and indestructible)
2) A Randall (I like the 6in. Sportsman's Bowie)
3) A Strider or Dwyer (Custom model is better - Cool grinds)
4) A Damascus blade from a Custom smith with chattoyance (like Fisk or Lairson)
5) A Chris Reeve One-Piece (Great idea)
6) A big Bowie (the real feel of history)

I myself am going to buy Zero Tolerance 0121 (cheaper than the above)

I, too, partake of the idea that quality is better than quantity. Trade all those Bucks for one Busse. Instead of getting a lot of mid-range folders buy a Chris reeve One-piece. Some of the models in the One-piece line are already retired. get one before it's too late.

I would enroll him in the NKCA. They have a youth club knife each year and it is made from different companies like Case XX. You could also get him a Father and Son Case set. I would buy the limited run Case knives because by the time he is your age they will be some that are very collectable and have a nice collector price. GOOD LUCK! Kevin

RAT RC-4 Tan SE
RAT SERE 5
RAT Production Izula
CRKT M-21 G-10 with the Vef serrations

for now :p

I agree with quality as well, and don't believe that I'm sacrificing quality in buying Buck and other knives that I have so far or plan to get. The reason I don't want to go with one "great" knife (or gun for that matter) over several "good" knives is that I can't be sure what his preferences will be. I would love to have a pile of Randalls and Sebenzas waiting for him, but like others have said, I should leave a little for other expenses too... especially since he doesn't even know what a knife is yet :)

Interesting thread & I also have an interest in the suggestions. I have a Daughter who has taken an interest in knives (She's 7) & has told me she wants a collection as big as mine, lol.

Anyways, she has an orange G-10 Case tiny Trapper, CRKT spectral KISS, an older U.S. made Gerber EZ-out (Which doesn't look like the current ones), an orange Spyderco Ladybug, & a Poliwog.

Down the road, I think a Sebenza would be ideal (Probably a small classic).

I'm pretty new to this, but my thought would be to focus on "firsts". The first production assisted opening folder - Kershaw Random Task; a Tanto by Bob Lum; a Loveless drop-point; the first framelock - a Chris Reeve Sebenza; etc.

Get him some type of Leatherman with locking tools and one of the Chris Reeve one-piece lineup. That's my 2 cents. :)

You might want to give a knife he can use and lose when he is around Cub Scout age and very nice knife to give to him when he gets out of college.

I still have the one I was given when I was a Scout. I was given a gun when I got out of college.

When my dad was on his honeymoon in Europe, he picked up a Swiss army knife in Switzerland and held onto it... assuming he'd have a son some day. When I was 13, he gave me that knife.

Small wonder I'm a knife nut! Of course, so is he! (He's 75 now; just scored himself a Randall off of E-Bay. You go, Dad!)

But the point is, it's not the number of knives that matter. In fact, too many sort of dilutes the idea. I liked what one person said - get a nice custom. You could even commission it specifically with some kind of very personal detail, and then when he's the right age, present it to him. It will mean the world to him.

Get him something limited edition or custom so, if need be he can make a profit on it when he wants to, as well as....

- when I was a kid, and in Boy Scouts, the swiss army knife was the king of cool. The more tools, the better.
- a good quality all purpose camping/survival knife: Rat Cutlery, Fallkniven A-1, etc.
- a cool auto to wow his friends and scare his enemies (just kidding): MT Socom Elite auto (my current favorite knife).
- a few practical, light, tough folders for EDC.

When I was younger my father collected knives, so I had a few, Ka-Bar, Army bayonet, swiss army, Hitler youth knife replica, Puma stag hunter.

I'll share a list I started several years ago for my son (he's eight), a lot of these are knives I, or our family members, have a history with. I'm trying to buy an example of each type of slipjoint pattern pocket knife, then what I consider to be good examples of various larger types. Partial list:

Folding:
- Buck 110 (folding lockback hunter) and SchradeUSA LB7
- C. Reeve Sebenza, original Al Mar SERE II, Mcusta anything
- Spyderco Police
- Opinel
- Mercator "KAT"
- Falcon stiletto
- original phillipine balisong
- Case two-blade folding hunter
- S&W folding lockback form the 1980's (example of an interframe)

Fixed:
- KaBar USMC knife
- Fiske bowie (I have the Camillus blade blank from SMKW, I'll have a handle put on later)
- Cold Steel Tanto
- SOG bowie
- Randall M1 (price/wait may knock this one off the list)
- Gerber Mk. II
- Morakniv (he'll get this one next summer for training out in the woods while camping)
- Himallayan Imports kukri
- Russell Green River skinner
- M7 bayonet
- Remington RH model, not sure which one yet

There's a lot more to this list, I was just too lazy to bring up the document. (Of course, most of these he won't see until he's much older.)

thx - cpr
