Knife collection storage

Got my display case today and wanted to thank you. Perfect. Even my big old Ka-Bars fit nicely.

I am glad it worked out for you also. I was worried that some of thicker handled fixed blades would not fit, but they all fit with room to spare. I am also very pleased with the value, quality and appearance of the unit.

Gollnick and others,
Are safe deposit boxes really safe? I mean, bank vaults tend to be very dry environments for storage. I try to keep my knives covered in a thin layer of oil during storage. With sheephorn I've experienced some minor shrinkage from dry conditions which corrected itself by soaking the knife handle in olive oil. I now do that occasionally for "an ounce of prevention" with my knives. However, in the past, I've read that olive oil eventually goes rancid? (Does anyone know the accepted "lifetime" of olive oil, .. one year ..ten years?)

I've also been using Camellia oil which Murray Carter told me is a blend of mostly parafin wax and a very small percentage pure Camellia oil. Either seems to work fine to keep the sheephorn from being too dry. Does anyone have any comments about either of these? My only worry about Camellia oil is that it's petroleum based. I don't know if there's any harm in that, so maybe it's an unfounded worry. And, with the olive oil I just worry about the extended time and the possibilities of it going rancid. Does anyone have any helpful comments about it? I try to keep an active eye on my knives to assure nothing develops that is harmful.

Cockroach, I think the storage chest that you pictured, tall with many small drawers may actually be a women's lingerie chest. I remember seeing one advertised as such at a local antique show. It seems to be a good fit for knives too.

Man, Chefget, that pic always kills me.

Myakka--that's a pretty nice piece of furniture you got there. That's similar to what I've been keeping my eye out for but haven't found yet.

jayharley or textoothpk--can you tell me what the inner dimensions of the drawers are? It's difficult to tell from the pics and the dimensions listed on the site, and I hate when I get something and it's just a hair too short for what I want. Are all the drawers the same size? Thanks.

All drawers are 7 3/8" wide. Drawers get progessively larger as you work down: Top:15", 2nd:15 1/2", 3rd:16", 4th:16 5/8", 5th:17 1/4", 6th: 17 3/4", bottom: 18 1/4".

I bought the natural-unfinished model. I'll figure out some stain, or leave it alone. Some of the drawers were a bit tight to open, just a bit of sanding fixed that. Rubbing a bar of soap on the edges would have as well. Fit and finish overall is fine, I think for how useful this is and considering the price. Was packaged extremely well, the glass top was not damaged, I don't see how it could have been. Shipping was damned quick.

Until getting the Champion, I used 'em for years. The insurance industry thinks they're very safe. If you have a fairly small collection, then they are a good option.

But, mine grew to the point that I was paying a small fortune to rent deposit boxes.

Thanks for that, Phil--very helpful, now I can see if it'll fit what I want it to. If it fits and their shipping to Hawaii isn't astronomical then I'll be picking one up.
