knife collection?

...
and as far as carrying goes, I for one can't because I can't Stand the thought of scratching the knife. I like them in pristine condition.

That is fine of course. But! I strongly suggest putting some knife in your pocket. On Opinel, a Swiss Army Knife, etc...anything! It will make you feel good to have it there, if you like knives. Even if it never gets used. Try it!!!!

addylo: I'm not so sure. What about someone (myself included) who collects KNIVES, period. All kinds, because they all have a purpose and/or story. It seems (to me, at least) that some measure of stature is afforded the collector over the mere "accumulator", a distinction I don't necessarily see. What say you?

I agree also. Just a matter of semantics really. Accumulation can even be found in the definition of collection.

Does a coin collector have to only collect coins of a certain country and time period to be considered a collection? A fine art collector only Monet or Picasso?
In my opinion no.

Plus, we are the only nut jobs that would even perceive a difference between a "collection" and "accumulation" of knives. 99% of the population would just call it a knife collection.

spend some time, and decide which knife you own is your favorite... then buy another one just like it.....one to keep pristine and one to carry and use.

as far as collections go, they are as personal as each person who collects...I have 500.00 knives in my collection, and I have 5.00 knives in my collection...I collect what speaks to me....does not always have to be something I intend to use or carry...as long as its something I want even if its just cause I think it's a neat pattern and know its garbage metal.... I buy quality users, I buy whatever I want to stick in the knife chest.... no rhyme or reason to it.... just enjoy what you enjoy because you enjoy it.

Marci: congrats, you've done your good deed for the day. He will be a happier person now.

Can someone help me locate a discounted priced CS srk or Bk2 in Manitoba?
any events or sales coming up. Thanks. and which one of the two would you get and why. I like both, and because I don't use my knives it doesn't make a difference if it's survival or bushcraft

Does you post #13 indicate a collector has no fun?

Given, an accumulation is one kind of collection, it just has no specific topic.
I agree with you, that fun is important, otherwise it would be work.
From what i understand a collector tries to broaden his knowledge on a specific theme.
Then he uses that knowledge as a basis for further decicions to enlarge the collection.
Posting on this forum sound like proof.
I mean the OP asks a group with the same interest what to collect.
- broaden his knowledge and make use of it.
Buying what one likes is more like a basic rule.

Today there is a vast selection on knives we can choose from.
It may be a little difficult to discern between the offers.
Not every product meets a need.

No. Exactly the opposite, in fact.

It indicates that, in my opinion, a collector should have fun and collect whatever makes them happy instead of being bound by made up rules like

"A collection in contrast to an accumulation should have a topic, a direction." or

"From what i understand a collector tries to broaden his knowledge on a specific theme.
Then he uses that knowledge as a basis for further decicions to enlarge the collection."

Some people jokingly call my collection "The Museum In Want of a Home" or "The Knife Store In Need of a Storefront". I have lots of "sharp & pointies" ranging from the 1700s to 2015, from 2" OAL folders to 40+" OAL FBs aka swords and bayonets). I started with US Military knives and Western and Kabar FBs, added Buck, Muela, Ontario FBS and branched out to include several different styles of knives (dive, throwing, etc). Over the span of a lifetime, interests vary, collecting habits will wax and wane, something jumps up and says "Buy Me".

Buy what you like.
Do what you want with it.
Don't give the "south end of a northbound mule" who chastises you over what you collect the time of day.

I have a vast collection of knives I've accumulated.

I really don't have a rhyme or reason behind most of my purchases. I see something I like, then, if I can afford it, I buy it. I sell/trade away much fewer knives than in the past, as I've refined my tastes and impulse buys.

I tend to plan much more than before, but not based on specific attributes I'm looking for.

If I look at my collection, there really is no overall category that it fits in. I could categorize some groups, but other than fixed vs. folder, I don't organize them according to a defined set of characteristics.

So, it may be a collection of knives to someone outside, but to me, it's just a pile of things that make me feel good.

Guys any good online or local store in Manitoba or precisely Winipeg? I have a friend coming in from there and would like to get a knife.
Thanks.
