Ok, I hope this is what you all have been waiting for; A new knife collectors review of three currently popular knives:
My review will be in order of when I received them in the mail:
1) Ontario Knife Company's Rat 2
2) Benchmade Mini Griptilian
3) Spyderco Delica 4
The beauty of doing a knife review, being a highly experienced collector (1 week of total experience) is my opinions cannot be criticized or challenged with silly things like my lack of knife knowledge, lingo, facts and/or science. Here are my initial thoughts:
1) Ontario's Rat 2: [/B]The first knife in my new collection. How can someone come up with the raw materials, transform them into a sophisticated tool and ship them half way around the world to a reseller, sell the tool and ship it for $26 and change. That was my first thought when ordering and receiving the Rat 2. The knife is solid, tight, blade is razor sharp, the blade flies open with a crisp snap, with no play. Love the knife, love the price, workmanship and quality seem very good.
New Knife Collectors Rating: 8.8 (out of 10)
2) Benchmade Griptilian Mini: This is the second knife in my new collection. I hate to spill the beans but this is my favorite out of the three. I love the axis lock. The fit of the knife and mechanics seem to be a slight step above the Ontario Rat2. Keeping in mind that I could have bought almost three Rat 2's for the same price, but this is a mano a mano comparison so I will try and stay on course. The fit and finish is very good but the mechanics are very, very good. Again, the knife is solid, tight, blade is razor sharp, the blade flies open with a crisp snap (a little crisper than the Rat 2), with no play.
New Knife Collectors Rating: 9.2 (out of 10)
3) Spryderco Delica 4: This is the third knife in my new collection. I like this knife and I would really like to like it much more that I do (???) . Maybe my love affair with this knife will grow over time, but here are my initial thoughts. The finish of the knife is good, not as good as the Mini Grip, about the same in my opinion as the Rat 2. The blade is very, very sharp and the mechanics are very tight. I like the opening design but the opening hole in the blade is a little rougher than I think it should be. There was a slight hitch in the opening action, but that slowly disappeared during use. This new collector would like to try some higher end Spyderco's to see if the fit and finish is of better quality, because as I said previously I would really like to like this knife more than what I do currently. I'm sure some die-hard Spyderco fans might set me straight on my impressions.
New Knife Collectors Rating 8.8 (out of 10)
With all this said, I am currently in search of an EDC that will rank 10 of 10 on the New Knife Collectors Rating scale.
