Step one would be to determine a target market and marketing method. Store, catalog, internet, gun and knife shows, something new? After that it's a matter developing relationships with suppliers and executing the marketing plan. It isn't any different than starting any other business.
I put our knife site up at the beginning of 1999 with a total investment of only around $30,000 and have since had it (and a couple of other sites) become my life's work. The growth has been phenomenal. It has been lots of work, of course, but it always is. I've owned and operated several business in my life and I definitely like this one the best. I have so much fun with new web sites, I'm trying to hire someone to manage what I've done so far so I can spend my time developing and growing new e-stores in new industries. I have a list of potential projects as long as my arm. I just need 48 hour days or some help.
I would imagine that the dealers who operate stores and print catalogs feel the same way about their businesses. The idea is to find an appropriate spot in the mix of things for yourself. Best of luck to you.
I was thinking about just starting a website. Mainly because I know enough about computers to make it easy for me. I don't have the resourses yet to open a full store, but I do have the interest to later on. I figure if I start something online I can later move to more if it's feasable.
