Okay so I've asked john if I can delay my next knife so I can try something new, and he has graciously agreed and pushed my order tot he end of the month. So what's the deal?

I asked if he could produce some of his quality Tin Knives or something like it at a slightly lower cost (still at a profit though!) bare bones so I could re-handle them and sell them on with only a small bump in price. i have some walnut sitting around and until i get some free cash it's not going to be doing anything anyway.

He countered with the suggest i design something. So i sat down and patiently re-worked some old designs i had as well as came up with some rough drafts of new ones trying to keep affordability, practicality and common sense in mind....when I completely failed to be able to capture any of those qualities I came out with these instead :D

Any advice or preferences would be welcomed! At the moment I'm thinking mostly of scandi, scandivex, saber or even chisel grinds which i figure would be cool on this size of knife. I've also posted a bunch on my "blog" thingy if you interested.

My wife found a pair of scissors with a bottle opener on them and thought of me, bless

they can all be made out of 1" bar sock or less, in either 1/8" or 3/32", (accept one I'm still working on.) They vary in length from just under 4" to just over 6". I think I may try for around 4" or 5" max though.

Also I'm trying to think of ways to cut down on waste, good idea?

Here's a shot or two of the Tin knife I put a handle on to give an idea, I just did a tear drop contour but I could do more contouring with little problem.

In hand

Sheaths would be a possible, potential addiction, but most likely a simple pocket sheath is best, I went a bit overboard?

One last shot, a picture to comfort Protourist and let him know the mammoth design i cam up with for the anniversary contest is still here, safe and sound :)

Think of this as kind of a "Mad Dogs and Englishman" kind of collaboration project to make an affordable, and handy, knife. (Bonus points for those of you old enough to know what I`m talking about. ;))

Cool Pete,I like the little cleaver looking dudes.

How many are you going to do?

Are they done yet?:p

Good idea nesting them as close together as possible to save waste BTW.

Thank you John, that's very cool of you,I love those colors as I said in the thread.

congrats myke, and thanks everyone for the imput

i've got some more finalized ideas, I'll try to get a picture up tomorrow morning, but I have to admit Jk design got me into drinking, beers fun with a pencil and some music FYI, might not see the sunrise for a change :)

Anyone get the number of that train? Dang

BTW:

numbered them 1 to 6 to make conversation easier, 1 -3 are int he 4 inch category, 4-6 are 5", all can be made out of 1" tall bar stock. If I had the spare money I'd say why not one of each! ha.

any favorites or suggestions?

thanks Grunt, I'm planning on sending that to john anyway to keep it safe (so long as John doesn't mind), others have expressed interest but I don't think anyone has to money to pay for it yet. If anyone can, they are welcome to ask John if he'll make any design I've ever drawn up, be only to happy to send the cut out to him for the purpose.

I like 1 5 and 6. Also I still really dig the big pig sticker in the last picture in the first post.

I'm digging no. 2 and no. 6
Drop point skinners, sow-bellies, spear points, drop point hunters are my thing.
I guess you're not into drop point re-curve. No.6 might look cool with a slight re curve.

I've liked many a recuvre :) easy enough to do if there seems to be a few more who want that, thanks for the suggestion!

I like 4 and 5 a lot. I'm finding that in that size, a flat blade with a fine point is a wonderful tool to have. There are very few cutting chores that it doesn't do well.

thanks, Mack, i know what you mean.

Anything anyone would change or improve, is the hump style to complicated int he handle? Would two holes look better then one, or 3 even better? I'm planning on 1/4" holes throughout to keep it simple or would smaller holes be better?

sorry to pepper you all with quetsions :)

I'm not too sure about the hump. I'm thinking that I probably wouldn't like it. It seems that it would put my wrist in the wrong position for comfort.

I like 4 & 5 also,but 4 more.
1/4 lanyard hole so one can put a short fob on it & a 1/8 pin up front.

I can see what you mean, so maybe something like number 6 with a 4 or 5 blade shape?

I like the hump on number 2 because it seems it would help with "rocker " cuts for that blade shape, the rest was just cause I liked the look of it :)

I like that idea t but then thought changing bits might prove more work, effort, labor for john, picky but I'm trying to think easy :)
