Since the tools I ordered are taking much much longer to arrive than expected, I decided to pick up the paper and pencil and be a little artistic.

Im thinking at will have a 5.5 inch blade and 4.5 To 5 inch handle, 1 to 1.3 inch wide blade, and a little over 1/8 inch thick. Given the curve of the blade im leaning more towards either a skinner or some kind of fighting knife. If I remember correctly I once saw a Persian fighting knife with a similar curve in the blade.
But I digress. Criticism welcome, looking forward to what yall think.

It would be a poor fighting knife.

It will work as a skinner, but would work and look better with less curve in the blade. All a skinner needs is a slightly raised and rounded tip to cut the skin away. The main part of the blade is just a hunter shape.

Add a short ricasso and a small choil so you can sharpen it properly.

Round the point of the handle but a little. That sharp end will not last long without damage.

That is better...don't you think so, too?

Now, you have to ask yourself if the full guard is really needed?

I think the handle looks a little fat to me. Maybe a little more belly to it? I have done a few sharpfingers that are similar without the guard.

Looking better. I agree that the handle looks to fat as well. Try making it thinner near the guard and tapering out to a bit thicker at the butt.

Trimmed down the handle a bit. Still trying to decide whether or not to have some kind of protruding guard, but with the new handle shape im not 100% sure as to how it will be shaped or how long it will be.

Okay, here is my $.02 for what it's worth. I like the blade design, but the handle not so much. I try to shape handles to the contour of my hand. This requires a belly on the bottom as the inside of your hand is shaped kind of like an egg.

below are the adjustments I would make to your handle:

Here is a link to a site that explains more on shaping handles to the contours of your hand.

I hope you find this info helpful.

The last suggestion is a good one. Look at his drawn knife. Handle shaping is rarely good on first knives. This is a good guide to starting well.

As to a guard, it serves to prevent the hand from sliding forward when the blade strikes a hard object in a forward thrust. It does very little in normal use for butchering and food prep....which is why they are rarely seen on such knives. They also get in the way in skinning.

Okay, so, no guard then, do more research on handles, and do extra research on everything else. Maybe by the time snail mail brings the tools I ordered ill be a regular bookworm. 😁
