Well here is what I came up with for my new fishing knife.

The handle length will be 4 1/4"

First 2 pins are stainless solid and the back is stainless tube.

I want stainless, but I will let SDS and NWA let me know what type of stainless they prefer working with.

The knife above is 1/8th thick with a 3 3/4" blade. I think I will ask SDS make it like that and ask Nick to make it 3/16ths thick at an 3 1/2" blade.

I want the spine to have a really square almost sharp edge to it.

So what do you think. Any sugestions?????

Looks cool man, I like the handle shape and the spear point. I know Nick and Shawn both have done some great D2 blades, that may be the way to go on them. I like D2, I just don't like to sharpen it!

That looks great man, really comfortable. For fishing it should give a good handle shape to resist slipping in either direction due to fishy hands.

So lets talk handle material. I would want grippy. I am thinking canvas micarta. Allthough I would love the NWA to match my black and Red linen Micarta, it is a lil too slick...

Spooky, do you think I should add a but swell, or is the palm swell enough??

Cool design Tony.:thumbup::thumbup:
For the handle material maybe one of the custom glow in the dark laminates. or BCM with a glow in the dark spacer.

First, I think the canvas micarta is the best idea for material. Works great when wet and amidst 'muck'. Second, I'm of the opinion that the handle would work 'as is'. The but swells are sometimes comforting but not always necessary. for example, I've got a Tora bushcraft knife, and the handle has a distal taper a bit like yours. But there is a finger groove up front (even less encompassing that your design) and it's still perfectly secure. It will also let the knife be more agile and more comfortable in non-traditional grips. Just my two cents!

I love the blade shape. I wouldn't change anything on it.

I'd go with a high-vis material on the handle. Something like a bright blue G10 with a blasted or coarse sanded finish.

Which grind are you going to have put on it?

I recently got a blade with blue burlap micarta impregnated with blue glow powder. But it doesn't glow a bit! Kind of a pain. It did glow, based on pics, at the point of manufacture however. HD had another one (one I copied off of) with green powder, but I couldn't see the glow in it either. Awesome idea that doesn't seem to work out in practice.

However! I do have a cool idea, very 'Fiddleback-esque'. You can get whole slabs of glow material for a blade, and I believe it would be badass to make a laminate (the way Andy/FB does) using the glow material and some micarta. (Edit: Just saw, I think this is what you were talking about in the second clause, great minds think alike!)

Thanks Tknife and Ira!!

Spooky we are on the same page as usuall!

If you're looking for just a fishing utility knife, I actually really like a wharncliffe for that. Works great for cutting up bait and line. The straight edge of a wharny holds the line onto it better if you're cutting with the tip.

I actually designed an all-around fishing/fillet/light camp knife a while back. Everybody's probably seen it by now, but this is it:

5.5" blade, 4.5" handle, Orange G-10, and 3/32" stock. This one's from Bryan Breeden.

Quite frankly, I don't much like palm swells on any knife. The handle on the knife above is secure enough for anything I'd use it for short of stabbing something really tough. Canvas micarta would be good, though. I will say that Bryan finishes his G-10 a bit rougher than most, which gives it quite a bit better grip. That might be another option.

It's also made out of O1 steel. If you're going to be going to salt water, and not cleaning the knife off much while in use, you're probably right to go with a stainless steel.

Those are some of my thoughts on a fishing knife.

Thanks Rupestris!

NWA makes a kickass flatgrind, so I would never ask him to change that.

I have never owned or handled anything that SDS has made, so I will leave him his choice in grinds. Not a hollow grind though...

right on Tony.. that's a great looking design man... i like it.. micarta scales are definitely the way to go.. i think the glow in the dark ones would be bad a$$ too...
i'm glad you decided to go this route instead of buying a production knife... there are so many cool knifemakers on here... i'm sure SDS or NWA will come up with something cool.. they always do...

So you are buying 2 knives? Or just having those guys come up with prototypes? I've been away...did I miss something?

Looks great buddy, you should have entered it in the contest on JK knives forum, the handle looks like it will work real well !!!!

I was looking for a new knife to take fishing, and asked for advice. SDS said to draw up what I would like, and ask one of the makers to do it. Shortly after Nick said he would like to do it. So I asked both SDS and Nick to make it.

I would like SDS to make it as drawn and Nick to make it with a 3/16ths thick and 3 1/2" blade. Ofcourse with his pin placement:)

I think it's pretty cool getting two makers to do a similar design to check out how they contrast and compliment eachother. Your only problem may be space as you'll probably want to take both all the time!

Looks good Tony.

I would look at 154 CM or CPM 154 as a good choice for a stainless blade.

I would also think about a full convex…but you already knew that.
