I was messing around in Photoshop and made a profile that I really like. I looked a t a bunch of knives and chose the parts that I liked best. Is this a viable knife profile? I'm sure it looks similar to a lot of knife profiles. just wondering if it is a certain style already. Hope that made sense.:)

It looks similar to other knives precisely because it's a viable design. I would make the handle a little wider. Cut out a pattern from cardboard or what-have-you and see if it feels comfortable.

It is a good looking design. Like JT says, widen the handle a bit, or just have it taper wider towards the butt. The only thing on the blade that strikes me as odd is how the cutting edge curls back up into the choil producing lots of belly in the blade. What scale are you thinking this knife be? Personally I see it as a 2.5" blade and 4.5" handle, or was this going to be a little 3 finger knife? Or are you planning bigger?

I can tell that your sense of what looks good from your photography has spilled over into knives! I think you have the right vision, now just refinement.

Is a lot of belly in the blade a bad thing?

No, just the way you have it drawn looks like the last 1/3 of the blade wouldn't be usable when cutting on a board. Its a prsonal preference thing, too. I say get some paint stir sticks and cut out a few variations on the theme. Myself, I like the belly of the blade to be in the first 50% from the tip, but you're becoming a knife maker, if you don't like it you can make another one!

If you like it, make it! That's the best part.

Post pics when your done!

Depends who you ask, and what you want to use it for. I like the way a gently curved edge (like your drawing ) slices in most uses, but as Xander says too much curve is bad if you want to use it on a cutting board.

Some possibilities for modification:

I took the liberty of adding the handle and plunge line.

I like your design because it is graceful and not blocky. I think you could play around with the butt of the handle and try some different shapes there too.

Anything is acceptable. It might , in the end be seen as a good looking art knife (using that term more loosely). If form & function is important then I would say that your first image, with a wider beavertail type handle , had better proportions. The subsequent outlines show a stretched handle as if you are striving for a full handle grip. In my opinion (based on art and function) a smaller blade needs a three finger handle for a better look and feel.

edit: Also pay attention as to how easy the knife will be to sharpen when you finalize your design...unless the knife is not meant to really be used.

+1 on this. The paint sticks at Home Depot are free and work great for this. They did look kinda strange at me the other day though when I bought a few small items and had 28 paint sticks!
