Knife display ideas

Following up on my cabinet post (over here), the bolt of felt I was waiting on arrived, and I'm now figuring out how this is going to work. That felt is just sitting loose for now, I'm trying to decide between velcro and some less-removable attachment options, pondering the stretchability of felt over 37", and having related thoughts.

But the concept seems proven. I'm also very close to removing the big black paper-lifter-things that occupy the first 6 inches of the drawer, just convincing myself there's no reason to regret doing that.

And I'm also not thrilled with how beaten up the exterior is, but I got it for a shop that hasn't happened yet. So this is sort of pulling in different directions now - display vs. tool box. But I don't have the access, or frankly the energy, to sandblast/powder-coat this, so it'll probably stay an ugly display until I move, at which point, who knows.

So that's progress for now. With five drawers total, I'll have way more storage for big sharp things than I have big sharp things, a first for me.

I think this is a really cool idea!

Knife displays are great aids to thieves. They can case the place at a party or when servicing your dishwasher :) Make sure you have good security. My knives are in cigar boxes, in a dresser on the third floor with a pit bull roaming the house :)

I don’t have parties generally, but I don’t associate with people that are of the sticky finger type, even family. Rarely ever is our home empty as I work from home. That’s a major deterrent to the local would be thrives. And I have a boxer.

Well I have a few ideas in the works. But I made this little balance stand the other day when I was taking a break from work.

I’ve been putting tung oil on this little stand. So far I have 3 coats on one side and 4 on the other. I threw it in with a batch of other items I’m finishing. Tung oil is a slow finish but it makes a nice warm shine. Followed by a coat of paste wax of course. I’ll post pics when it’s finally done.

This is the coolest I've seen. Perhaps the owner is on here?

I think that would be Slade’s wall.

Well I think I’m calling it done. One of the stands I’m working on. A slab cut crotch maple limb with a nice burl. Needs paste wax. It is live edge and live bottom, except I’ve sanded I to have three resting spots so it’s level and stable.

I got a couple more in the works including a fixed blade display with no space for folders.

I stopped making my own displays early on, and simply buy ready made displays. They are usually front loading shadow boxes, and if they need interior modifications for whatever project I'm planning, then I do whatever needs doing.
I also don't shy away from using any factory provided display that may have come along with my acquisition(s).

Here are just a very few of the many displays I use throughout my domain...
(The first two shown with their glass topped lids open to avoid some glare)...

They having glass fronts is important to me, giving that layer of protection from things gathering to much dust, and giving any viewer the signal to look, but not touch. Otherwise, folks sometimes want to put their acidic fingers all over the goods, and that would cause me too much extra maintenance time 😅
You should charge admission. Very nice.
