Knife Doldrums: I might have it bad

I have 5 more knives coming in, and one to sell, then I have my "perfect assortment" of edc knives. After that, I told myself no more. We will see....

For now. Six months from now it will change again.

Hobbies are interesting... if you aren't buying anything new, you're in the doldrums. I can say that about firearms, but I just bought a new one in the last month. It's funny though... I just don't get excited about these things as much as I used to.

Finally got my ultimate grail knife (busse ASHBM). so content with it there is no other knife I want. Just need a sharpening system.

Send it to Josh at Razor Edge.

I've look at his site before and his layout for pricing kinda confused me. If I'm reading it right, is it $25 no matter the length for a simple sharpening?

Not sure... Every knife I've sent him was for major mods.

I've found myself lately not really interested in very much in the way of knives.

Anyone else in a period of stagnation like me?

I am in my second run of this... I see it as a natural evolution of the collecting hobby. Its almost like maturing. The first time it happened to me it was fixed blades. I had so many, most of which never even got used, that I couldnt find anything that I liked. I sold nearly every fixed blade that I had. Bought a very nice Specialized full suspension mointain bike and never looked back. I had hit my own practical limit for fixed blades. Now I have a handful that I use the heck out of and thoroughly enjoy.

The second time it was folders. My personal cutlery awakening occurred when the "overbuilt" Ti framelock flipper craze blew up. I bought a few different models that I thought I had to have. They cut like shit, and carried like bricks. I tried to cut an apple for my kids at panera and it kept breaking apart. It irritated the F out of me. On a whim, I was looking for something different and bought an Al Mar Falcon. Lock back, micarta handle and bolsters, super thin ffg blade and GASP,... AUS 8 steel. Man it cut like a scalpel and carried light and slim. It made me start looking at FFG blades. Held a spyderco at my local cutlery dealer and before I ralized what was happening I paid for it. Guess what... It made me sell off most of the other folders that I owned at the time. Now I have a handfull of FFG spydercos that I use the heck out. They cut so well and carry so well that they have ruined pretty much every other full sized folder that I look at.

So in way more words than propbably needed, yes, I am in the same spot as you. My advice is sell everything you dont use and cherish the blades that you do carry and use. At some point something will catch your eye and since you have matured in your collecting/using you will be easily able to determine if it is something you actually will use and enjoy.

I haven't bought a new knife since August of 2015.

I even gave a lot of my knives to family, friends, coworkers.

Only kept a Spyderco Police (full serrated) , Military, Para 2, Emerson Mini CQC 15, and a HK Axis ( full size).

Still have my Fallkniven F1 for outdoorsy stuff.

Just really haven't seen anything new that I just have to have.

It helps that I am not into Ti framelock flippers.[emoji6]

OP: Get yourself a custom knife.

I have two customs, both are fixed blades.

I've considered many custom folders, but my goal there would be to have a custom that would end my collecting. Just not seeing anything worthy of that distinction.

This could be it, or even less, not sure, but full height re-grinds are definitely by the inch, and way, way more expensive...

Email him, as he answers once or twice a day all the time.

I have been in the doldrums myself for nearly a year, as there is very little in the way of 10 inch plus hollow handles... And when there is, I have no funds and they slip away...

Sound advice. Thanks. Most of my Spydercos are purchased because they have work and home uses (what I call "everywhere carry"). But I'll be forthright in admitting I bought some of those just to say I had them. I had no "need" for them as far as I can tell.

I have some knives for outdoor use but those have been used less and less since my career took a different direction and I'm so busy with it these days. I'm just too tired to hike and camp these days.

I have given away and traded some knives but that hasn't really inspired me to replace them with others.
