So I recently received and e mail of a knife drop. I went to the site and found all offerings to be sold out. How does this work? and is it consistent with all manufacturers?
Very common. You often have to be quick to get your order in on items that are in demand. Just stay with it or check the Exchange for reasonably priced items in the secondary market from members who have earned the trust of the community.
Alternatively, you can post a "Want to Buy" thread in the Exchange as well.
Definitely not consistent with all manufacturers, but when a brand's demand far outpaces their production capacity it happens pretty easily. Brands like Carothers, Half Face Blades, and Albers are like this, or certain models from less hyped brands.

Some manufacturers also deliberately release their products in small drops to produce fast sellouts thereby increasing demand. It's just a form of psychological manipulation.
The correct term is "Artificial scarcity". Search on that term and find out their tricks.
Thanks for pointing out "Artificial scarcity". It's something I often discuss. And it is common across a lot of consumer items. "Never give a sucker an even break" remains the rule.
