knife engraving

I am interested in getting my SOG seal pup elite engraved. I was wondering what I should know about engraving and where are some good places to get it done?

Get it laser engraved. I think Knifeworks can do it for you.

is laser engraving going to put a coating on the knife or actually engrave into the steel? because I have another knife that is "engraved" and is a kind of black coating in the shape of the letters and has rubbed off in parts.

"Engraving" is removal of a minute amount of material to leave wording or a pattern in it. Lasers are often used because it is quicker and cheaper than by hand because you use a computer to set the image.

That does not sound like "engraving" to me unless some sort of pigment (or carbon scorching) has been left in the engraved surface. Sounds more like silk-screened painting process.

For basic laser-engraving, you can go to a local trophy shop, or memorabilia stores in shopping malls.
