Knife Failure Stories

My experiences have been most positive with knives, but I have had a couple "malfunction" without any serious consequences. I had a SOG Twitch II that never worked properly.....

I really wish you had posted this 2 days ago. I've noticed my new SOG Twitch II needs to be "warmed up" a few times before the A/O feature starts to work properly.

It's not going to be an EDC. More like a Gent's knife for the rare formal occasion.

I snapped the tip off of a Schrade Uncle Henry trying to gently cut an arrowhead out of a tree stump. I broke a mora by digging out a dandelion and twisting by hand. I put enormous chips in the edge of another mora trying to cut a fuzz stick out of a piece of PINE (that means soft) wood - chips more than 1/4 inch long.

A Leatherman Charge blade folded on me on the very first time it was used. I had been trying to clear out some grapevines in my yard. The edge didn't touch my hand. At first I thought my work glove had activated the lock release, but one week later it happened again when I was cutting out some saplings, this time without gloves, also no injury. I sent the Charge to Leatherman warranty, which shipped it back, said no fix necessary since everything was in tolerance.

That was the only of several locking knives and multitools I have owned over a decade that ever failed.

Several Years ago I was cutting plastic banding with a Spyderco Native. The lock disengaged twice while I was cutting. I believe it unlocked because there was a bit of lateral torquing while cutting. I ended up trading it for a Delica and I did not have any problems with the Delica.;)

Hope you warned the guy you traded it to!

I had a Leatherman Juice break on me, 3 times! The blade spring snapped for no reason. I sent it back, they replaced it with a new one. Then it broke again! I sent it back and they sent me another new one. I thought it was just coincidence, but then it happened again, same spring on the flat blade. I decided it was a design flaw and exchanged it for a Wave. It's been fine (so far).

So far most of these posts have revolved around folders (or some iteration of a folder)... not too many posts for fixed blades.

Do many people carry a fixed blade on here? And it is a 'hard use' knife? I'm kind of surprised I haven't heard more tales on here from our folks serving in the armed forces...
Regardless, all of these posts and insights are really appreciated. Keep it up!

Let's see... half of the wood chisel off on my Vic Swisstool trying to pry apart frozen chicken breasts (did the job with a Busse SHBA), broke a couple of Bucks...one was a smaller fixed blade subjected to young and dumb; the other a plastic handled folder that chipped apart ( and I mean APART) during sharpening (I kid you not)...all the others are crud kitchen knives with no real tang flying or prying out of their handles.

YMMV, but digging for the hip-bone on deer while removing the hindquarters have been responsible for the lost of more than one of the tips of folders I've owned over the years.

Although most were easily fixed/re-ground using stones and files, the current Recon 1 in my pocket was the last one to which this happened.

I've written about breaking a bunch of different folders and fixed blades several times in the past. Don't feel like rehashing it all right now....
