Bought my F-I-L, who owns a scouting museum, a BSA Case knife for Christmas last year. A bit more $$ than a regular Case, but the quality was excellent and the knife was a real beauty.
My dad got me a custom fixed blade for my Eagle Scout knife. A one of from a dear friend of mine, Lamont Coombs Jr., it is the single most prized knife I own. I say do something special....
Congrats - to the new Eagle -- check into the 100th anniversary of Scouting knives - a revival of an old pattern - or look at the SAK Classic SD with "Eagle Scales" to mark the occasion! - give him a pat on the back for me... an Old Scout on the National Protestant Relationships Committee- BSA

Congrats to your son. And if you are married to your wife and you. My son is fast approaching completion of his Eagle Project. Has to be complete by 11/11/10, his 18th Birthday. It is a great accomplishment and he has done a lot of work, but so have you and your wife.
I have a knife that I believe has ivory scales. If he gets this done and approved, I plan on having the Eagle Award scrimmed on one side and his initials on the other side.
If I were him, from the suggestions made so far, I would want the swamp rat ratmandu! For something cheaper, maybe a becker campanion. Getting still cheaper, something like a Mora 2000 in high carbon steel.
