Just need a little help in finding a knife to give
to a Marine at graduation.
Fixed or folder it dont matter it just needs to be
an E.D.C.

In addition to an EDC, I would get a Kabar for the Marine. I always figured they should be issued as graduation presents.

A Marine and his Kabar, seems to me kind of like Apple Pie, Mom, peanut butter and jelly, etc.

Send a hearty congrats from all of us here on the forum!

A Busse and a Sebenza would do him very well for a very long time!

TOPS CQT Magnum folder. It has the stoutness and capability of a fixed blade, but can be folded up for compact carry. It's a BIG knife for a folder. When opened, it's almost as long as a KaBar from end to end.

For his purposes in the military, you might want to get him the blade with half serrations on it. The tips can be either bowie-style (Model 747) or tanto-style (Model 711). You can get a kydex "fast-draw" sheath designed for quick deployment by police and military, or a ballistic nylon pouch sheath. The knife is within the parameters of maximum-allowed carry length by military rules. It is a VERY popular knife with LEOs and military all over the world, with good reason.

It's become my personal all-around favorite blade. I can use it for survival, defense, and general utility, and when folded it is much easier to carry. The handle is six inches long, and about 1/2" thick. It was made to be comfortable with or without gloves on. I can open and close it, and use it easily even with thick winter gore-tex gloves on my hand. The edges and corners of the handle make great impact weapons and "grab and control" weapons when the blade is closed. Many times, I put it in my front pants pocket instead of the sheath, depending on where I am, for discreet carry.

All the Best,

Fixed Blade: Mad Dog ATAK 2

Folder: large plain CRK Sebenza or a Microtech LCC DA or a Microtech SOCOM DA

Take him to a knife show and let him pick!!

I would not consider a KaBar as an EDC, even for a marine. Walking around the barracks with a fixed blade is not going to be kosher. Out in the field is a different story, but for EDC, get a good folder that can be dropped in a pocket out of sight.

I have a friend thats a marine, they all seem to want ka-bars, i dont know why, just seems to be a the culture, so consider the best ka-bar made.

That being said my personal preference would be a Busse Mr Mojo, and a LCC tactical MA

If you are looking at $400-$600 to spend, I would agree with getting a good solid folder and a nice fixed blade to go along with it. I would suggest something along the lines of an Emerson Waved CQC7B, Busse Badger Attack E, and custom kydex sheath for Badger. That should run right around $400, maybe a bit under if you shop around. That leaves plenty left to set him up with a Ka-Bar:rolleyes: if you want, and a nice multi-tool like a Leatherman Wave and still be under the $500 mark with a very nice assortment of gear that will hold up for as long as he will, if not longer.

My son is an MP in the Marines in San Diego. A 3" blade limit is enforced. It sucks. It seems that the military has to be politically correct. He is sending a 5" bowie and a Randall #1 back for keeping. I sent him a small damascus 3' neck knife (belt knives are out, due to BG possible grabbing). It may depend on where he is stationed.

One Marine that was stopped and searched on base had a 4" Buck fixed blade in a nice leather sheath and he was in deep do do. This is not some story some one made up. It is the way it is and I still don't understand why. Go figure that one out.

raker,

I'm really glad you brought that up. My shooting partner's son was a Blackhawk Crew Chief. It was a long time before he got clearance to carry a 4" Emerson folder instead of the standard 3" (and it wasn't easy). When his unit was deployed to Bosnia and then East Timor, his father offered to loan him his ATAK2, but he had to decline. I'm curious at what stage Marines are authorized to carry larger knives? Do they have to be in an actual combat situation?

Was looking for something for my son as well -- graduates in November.

Originally I had a 3" folder in mind, since you can go pretty much anywhere with one of those. That was before 9/11.

I recently bought him a BlackJack Trail Guide, although I'm not at all sure when / if he'll be able to use or carry it.

Bizzare as it may seem, knives and marines don't seem to go together anymore.

DancesWithKnives, I think they are a lot like the school board. Some one said, no weapons, and then they try to figure out how many things can be used for weapons and if it sounds bad, it must be bad. Zero tolerance is a weinie cop out. You can't find any one that doesn't blame some one else for all the rules. No intestinal fortitude and afraid they will be in the spotlight. A lot of their actions can't stand the light of day.

I never take "weapons" to school. I may have two or three knives of various sizes on or about my person at any one time. I always have at least one. In order to do a job, you have to cut some things and a knife is the only thing that works.

I have never figured out why you are a criminal by walking onto the school grounds if you have a knife in your pocket, and you weren't when you were across the street. All the young adults that do carry knives with them when in the mall with all the people, don't turn into bad guys just because they forgot them when they went to school.

Enough of my "ranting" for now. I got a knife in the oven so I am playing with the puter.

Get a Marine a knife made by Marines for Marines, a Strider blade. Check out the Strider forum and call or e-mail the Strider guys.

Small wood inlay Sebenza; a knife for life. :)

Yeah, USMC Ka Bar re-issue. It's a symbol more than a knife. It's tradition. I have a Cammilus USMC folder that was about $25. Nothing fancy, just a nice knife. Cammilus may have them, but they were a short run "spec/prototype" for a contract the Marines / DOD never picked up.

Black finish stainless scales, single sheeps foot blade with USMC on the scales.

In the $500 range, I'd look around for a Springfield Garand or 1903. Citizens Marksmanship Program offers surplus Garands. Fulton Armory has links. www.fultonarmory.com

There are serious restrictions about what active duty personnel can have in the barracks or even in the field. Check that out, or at least be aware that your favorite "jarhead" (a hard earned title of respect) may not be able to keep his "gift" with him -- or that it may be an attractive item for theft in a barracks. (I don't worry about Marines. But sometimes, snakes get into the barracks.)

I'd buy him a Strider or an Emerson.

folder or fixed those are the best hard use.

a little cheaper and just as good would be cold steel srk or recon tanto.
