im deploying to afghanistan this fall

im thinking id like to take either a 3 or a 4 and cant decide between the 2 i have both but im going to purchase the knife i take in tan, itll ride on my belt.

id also use a sharpshooter sheath systems sheth because i like the security of the fasteners and the leather doesnt rattle even if it clinks against molle gear or magazines plus it has that coating on it so i dont have to worry about my sweat affecting the leather.

i have no plans on using it as a weapon (ill have guns for that purpose and i am also going to take a tomahawk as well) more for utility and as a companion to a folder and a leatherman

im probably gonna go with the 4 just because it has a 3/16 inch thickness which will come in handy if i need to pry but then again thats one of the reasons im gettin a tomahawk.

the tomahawk i am planning to take is the american tomahawk VTAC and the folder is an emerson commander ill probably bring an izula along as well incase i need to loan out a knife to a buddy.

any suggestions would be welcome on any of the blade choices

thanks in advance for the advice

Well IMO I would have gone with the rc-4. thickness and size it would be perfect. Also stick with the plain edge version. Makes for so much easier in the field sharpening department. Also on a side note...Keep your head down and be safe over there in there and thank you for your service.
God bless

thanks for your opinion. also i forgot to mention that whichever i choose it will be plain edge i stopped liking serrations on knives when i turned 18

I think the thicker knife is a smart call too.

+1 on staying safe and come home healthy and quickly...

I'd go with the 4 or maybe even the 5. I was surprised how many times a thicker blade came in handy over in Iraq. Never went to Afghanistan, but I imagine the same holds true there.

Definately the RC 4 over the 3. However, I would also look into an RC 5 as they are 1/4 inch thick.

I would probably say the RC-4, since it it would make a good all around knife. Also thank you for your service

If I had to go to war, I'd have the RC-4. (sorry for the rhyme -seriously) For me, it's the perfect balance of knife for any chore that stays in a compact EDC sized package. I prefer it over the 3 as the 4 is more knife than handle and it's a bit beefy'er. -But that's just a preference. I'd take the 5 for the ultimate stuck in nowhere blade. But you gotta think through what will work best for your gear/carry needs.

It's awesome that you've decided on RAT in any case, and God's Speed on your safe passage and return.

Thank you for your service! I can't say between either the RC-3 or RC-4 because I haven't seen those in person before but I would go with a plain blade, easier to sharpen in the field. Good luck and come home safe!

I would not go with anything smaller than the RC-4 for your purposes & as others have said, you should consider the RC-5. It's quite a bit more knife for only being one inch longer & you get a more comfortable handle as well.

Thanks for your service & I wish you Godspeed!

I think you should consider an RC-5. You will probably have more use for prying than you will for fine cutting, and the RC-5 is built to take it. Good luck.

RC-3 will save space but I would rather take the extra space up and take the RC4 and be able to pry with it and have a little something larger....just dont plan on bringing it home with you....I sent two friends to Iraq/Afghanistan with a few knives of mine and they got searched (as did everyone they knew) and weren't allowed to bring any weapons home with them, including those they brought...it might be different for you but I wouldn't plan on it.

Go with the 4. And Thank You for your service and courage. Stay safe :thumbup:.

I'm no solider, but since you'll have a smaller blade on the Leatherman and the Emerson, I'd go for at least the RC-4.

Thank you for your service.

Go with the rc4 or rc5 as you already have a wicked slicer in the commander. Be safe in the field my friend, lots of my family have served and 3 LEO's right now. Don't believe that F**ing jerk on the redeye slagging us, lots of Canadians support our southern neighbour's/brothers in arms!!!
