Hey all,
Haven't posted in a while. Question for everyone. I'm going to be at the beach this week. Wondering which knife would be best to edc. It will see some time waterside. I'm curious which knife steel you all would suggest My options are: s110v, s30v, cts-bd1, 8cr13mov, aus8, 154cm, or just some some junk folder that is completely expendable if destroyed. Sadly, I've traded away all of my spyderco's in VG10 which were my go to knives for beach use. Thanks for the advice.

Salt or fresh water beach?
Either way, with your options listed, I'd grab the BD1 with a light coat of the oil of your choice.

One of the spyderco salts. My personal choice is the Pacific salt fully serrated.

What he said. Whatever Spyderco Salt fits your fancy. Edge retention on a plain edge is rather poor, much better on a serrated. Easy to sharpen either way. If it doesn't end up in Davy Jones' Locker, you'll find use for it in the rest of your life even if its not an EDC. A lanyard would help with that.

If you want to go all out, there's the new Caribbean Salt in LC200N.

Otherwise, just get something cheap. 8Cr13MoV is not very stain resistant, but there's plenty of cheap knives that are of decent quality that'll do fine for a vacation. A Ka-Bar Dozier folder has AUS-8 (better than 8Cr) and is ~$20. Highly regarded as a quality "beater" knife.

not 8cr13mov or Aus8 unless your okay with removing rust and possible pitting later on. I get rust on those just from humidity and finger prints. 154cm is decent but wouldn't be my first pick of your bunch.

s30v bd1 and s110v have pretty good corrosion resistance. s110v being better of the three in my experiences. I'd still rinse them in clean water and dry.

maybe down the road upgrade for a beach knife in h1 or lc200n. best of the best that I've seen. have fun.......

It depends on how much time you will spend at the beach (guessing salt). Spydies are great, but not throw away quality, at least to me. If only for the beach, I would get the cheapest 420 or 440 or "surgical stainless" available and forget about it. But if you need an ocean survival knife, that is a different matter. I would have to goog that.

Thanks guys. Leaving in a couple days and have to choose from what I have. Unless I grab something cheap at walmart. I would love a spyderco pacific salt, but have neither the time nor funds to order one at the moment. I might just pick up a $4 ozark trail folder. Should be serviceable for the week. I'll have to plan better for next year.

My beach knife is my bright orange Spyderco Urban wharncliffe, (freshwater). I bent the wire clip so retention is crazy strong. It’s super light so it rides fine in my swim trunks, the linerless G10 handles and vg10 don’t leave me worrying about corrosion and the colour is nice and bright just in case I drop it.

I am currently at the beach, I brought with me my blue Buck Quickfire, 420hc as well as a classic red SAK huntsman.

I recommend Boye also. I have had my Boye sailing knife for 13 years. It's been taken into the Atlantic dozens of times and has never had a speck of rust anywhere. It's super sharp and easy to maintain.

IMO if you rincé your blade with clear water and dry it after , s30v or cpm154cm can handle it just fine

If your plan is to Nath with your knife maybe a junk knife may Ben the best option

For what I am concerned I have chosen a salt 2 in h1 from Spyderco last summer and I am very happy with it

For a trip to the beach to peel an apple, any of the knives mentioned in the OP will be fine. Heck, bring your SAK.

For serious use around salt water, bring a MISSION Ti knife, a Boye Cobalt or Spyderco LC200N.

the variety of salt knives spyderco puts out is completely unmatched.

Since I can use only one at a time I chose quality over variety every time.

That being said, ANY steel will rust; Cobalt doesn't.
