Knife...for college?!

Hey everyone,

I'm off to college this fall and after reading their rules and regulations, I noticed that they only allow 2.5" blades and under. :(

Of course they probably won't be extraordinarily strict about being a little off on blade length (I hope!), but you have to take every excuse to buy a new knife right? :D

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an EDC folder under 2.5" inches, one that I don't have to worry too much about being abused a little, and preferably under $200. (Yeah, it's a little vague, but I don't know that many small folders...)

Thanks.

I second the Dodo. I'm an educator and often have to go to schools and colleges full of highly sensitive people who don't like knives and the Dodo seems to win them over or at least not freak anyone out. I don't have a formal blade length restriction but often carry it anyway.

Also, a SAK will usually not raise any eyebrows. You might consider having a slipjoint for mundane tasks.

Finally, just don't open anything one handed. It's easy to forget this but a slow two handed opening will defuse people.

If you're going to abuse it a little anyway, consider finding a knife whose handle, clip and lock you really like and dremelling down the blade to fit. I have an Endura that I whittled down to three inches (mostly due to a broken tip) and turned a five dollar eBay knife into a super, michigan-legal EDC.

check with your local knife dealer, he may have something nice thats right up your alley. I picked up a Buck 503 Prince,2.5 " blade , 3 3/8 closed , stag handle. Definatly a good looker. Stuff like that usually doesnt make big news, but they're out there.

If you can find one, pick up the current sprint run of the Spyderco Spur. It's a really solid knife with a deep hollow groound blade. I would also recommend a Spyderco Dragonfly too.

On a different note look at a Kershaw rainbow leek or if that is too big a scallion. Very non-knife people (shepple) friendly.

I'd just carry what I wanted to but also keep it within reason. A neck knife or folder would probably not attract attention but something like the RTAK or Battlerat would not be a good idea.

"turned a five dollar eBay knife into a super, michigan-legal EDC."

hey dogplasma from what ive learned any size knife is legal in michigan as long as it is not carried with unlawful intent.

Carrying firearm or dangerous weapon with unlawful intent—Any person who, with intent to use the same unlawfully against the person of another, goes armed with a pistol or other firearm or dagger, dirk, razor, stiletto, or knife having a blade over 3 inches in length,

but it looks like a knife under 3 inches may be carried with unlawful intent

How about a Benchmite, or Kershaws' Scallion and Chive. All three are in the $50.00 or less range, and great quality.

Why not a gent's knife? Queen has some sweet models, check out www.cumberlandknifeworks.com...I personally EDC a large stockman, and find it to be very handy. The thin blades will outcut any super-beefy folder, the fit and finish is top notch, D2 steel is naught to be trifled with, and almost all models (excluding pearl) are under 50$.

I agree with Anthony Cheeseboro on his choices but will include the Goddard Jr and LadyBug.

The Spyderco Dragonfly is a nice knife. The stainless steel handled version is very solid for a little knife.

I love my Spyderco Dodo, what a great knife, sharp, small, great grip. When I pick up my Dodo it just falls into my hand like it should have been there all along.

The Spyderco Kiwi would also be a great knife to just throw into your pocket. The Kiwi also has the sophistocated non-knife people flair. I could imagine it used in one of the Smirnof commercials to slice the dude's tires before he goes into the party to drink. If that is what you are going for.

Hope you find something that suits you good and good luck at school.

Yet another vote for the Dragonfly. It has a wide and thick blade that is a flatgrind design. The handle is very ergonomically pleasing if your hands are not very large. Good luck in college. In what degree program will you major?

I carried a Spyderco Endura all through college, but that was over 10 years ago in a relatively knife-friendly place and time...

These days I would definitely be more careful about what I carried on any college campus - a simple SAK like a Tinker for mundane tasks along with a stronger folder for anything else - if I had a 2.5" limit I would suggest the Spyderco Titanium Salsa, or the Dodo.

I'm headed to college this fall also. Once I sell what I have now I think I'm going to get a Spyderco Dodo bc most people think its cool, including myself, and its very useful. I've had 3 so far and I continue to sell them, but this time I'm keeping it! I'm also going to grab up a small Sebenza for any outdoor activity I get myself into. I used to have one and I miss it. I also want to bring my Benchmade 3100 as a gents knife. Its very small, but very automatic, hehe. Where are u going to school?

Spyderco Dodo or the Salsa.
But the question should be, "How many knives can you carry, that have a blade under 2.5 inches??" :)
2, 4, 6, 8?? :D
You need left and right side, front and rear.
Let us know what ya decide.
