Knife...for college?!

Hey thanks for all the suggestions everyone...I'm a big fan of Spyderco myself...so I'll probably look into the Salsa or Dodo, but how is the lock in the Benchmite, pretty solid?

BTW, trane fan, JediKnight86, I'll be off to UCLA...majoring in biology o.O

Thanks again for all the advice :)

Good old UCLA! I went there myself, and you don't have to worry about the 2.5" blade limit, as long as you carry folders. California Penal Code Section 626.10 says that there is a ban on fixed blades > 2.5", but there's nothing illegal with carrying a large, non-switchblade folder.

Hmmm either times have changed...or California knife laws are a little different on campus.
Check out this link: http://www.ucpd.ucla.edu/ucpd/clery.htm#weapons

Quote from website: "Possession of firearms or replicas, ammunition, explosives, knives/blades longer than 2 ½ inches, other weapons, or fireworks are against the law in the University community or at University-sponsored activities..." :( :( :(

Hey, good luck with college.
The lock on the benchmite is quite nice. I only got to fondle one for a short while before i gave it to my cousin as a wedding present, but I was impressed. I however felt the handle to be to small and unweildly. For what it is worth, I would recomend the SOG Twitch I or II. Both fit the dimensions listed. They are nice back-locking assisted knives that hold an amazing edge. I probably went through 200 boxes at work before i even steeled mine. I own the twitch I because I thought it was more aestheticly pleasing. They aren't pricey either, you could buy a couple!

I just read the relevant statute, CPC 626.10 that is quoted on the website. It refers to dirk, daggers, ice pick or knife having a fixed blade longer that 2 1/2". Folders are not prohibited. The part on the website that discusses blades on campus poorly paraphrases the statute.

If I were you I would read the relevant statute and decide for yourself what you want to do.

Even if there is no formal restriction on what he can have, you have to keep in mind that your typical college person (student or faculty) can be very anti-knife. Going with something little/PC for that reason could save you a world of grief because you don't want to alienate yourself from someone who could make your life miserable over something so easily avoided.

Hey thanks for pointing that out...I should have checked out the Penal Code earlier and when I checked it, you're absolutely right.

Meh, I'll probably get a another knife anyways, can't go wrong with more knives! :D

when in college i carried a spyderco delica spyderedge on me and a SAK ranger in my backpack, never a problem.

If the 2 1/2 inch limit is strictly enforced then the Benchmade Benchmite is very nice. Xicar Knives have two models that seem well made and would fit the bill. I have an Elan that seems fairly sturdy and has sharpened up well. The knife I like best is the Jeff Angelo Fluted Folder but it is just a bee's whisker over the size at 2 5/8.

Let me get this straight: A soon-to-be college kid says he needs a knife to take with that's "preferably under $200?" Man, I don't even think I went to college on the same planet as young EiNLaNZeR.

Back in 87 when I packed off to university as a freshman, I toted along an old two-blade Old Timer, a SAK Explorer with a loose handle, and a Schrade LB7 folding hunter (which saw virtually no use). Truth be told, the SAK's caplifter, corkscrew and tweezers got most of the work. Next, I'd say the Old Timer saw the most action as it was my EDC (while the SAK stayed in my desk). Sadly, the OT and SAK lasted but one year in the dorm. Both walked off with some unknown SOB with sticky fingers.

Personally, I'd say buy a SAK and save the rest of the dough to put towards a cool spring break camping, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, whatever trip!
